M3A1 Academy Kit
Posted by Lintltj5 on Sunday, January 25, 2015 6:46 PM

So Im strating to build the M3A1 kit from Academy after doing lots of research. Id like to build "The Payoff" Bougainville November 1943.

Im new to the site and am having trouble posting pictures, but I have questions concerning the decals for this particular tank. There are two wartime photos of this tank showing the

tank crew alongside the tank. 4 things I notice. 1. "The Payoff" is closer to the front of the tank than in the kit instructions. 2. There is no pinup girl on the tank as per the decal sheet.

3. It appears that there are two "5" platoon on the tank. One as per the instructions, the other appears to be hidden by the reserve fuel barrel.

4. It looks like there is a yellow stripe as per the "Tiger" M3A1 tank from N. Africa around the turret.

I apologize but Ill have to ask you to google search "m3a1 on bougainville" to see the photos.

The idiotic upgrades that Apple has for its operating system have completely wrecked the ability to paste

photos from photobucket.

Are these the only 2 photos of this particular tank?

Did Academy get its decal references from a particular source? Osprey Book?

Any help appreciated.

There is a face book group devoted to modeling Pacific War Armor. If you have a fb account, you can join and ask there. Many more experts in this subgenre there: www.facebook.com/.../1598392243719548

The link below will redirect to a page hosting a few pictures of this particular tank. There is a pin-up painted on the hull which is visible in a couple of the photos.

I just found the photo you referred to with the crew posing outside the tank. There is no yellow stripe, but a there is a very sharp reflection off the flared out portion of the turret. This tank is a Marine veteran serving in the Pacific and not subject to Army regulations put in place in North Africa. There is no pin-up on the port side of the hull, but the photo of Gen. Allen sitting on the tank clearly shows that it is present on the starboard side.

Thanks for taking the time to look into the photos. I came across that picture only once before and had forgotten about it. It doesnt show up often on google searches. I guess it puts the marking questions to rest, but I still wonder what Academy was doing when they made the decals for "the payoff".
