First try at Armour
Posted by Hodakamax on Thursday, June 30, 2016 9:53 AM

Being a Airplane sort of guy I thought I should build at least one tank. I found this Hobby Boss 1/35 modern German Leopard 2 A5/A6 on super sale and decided to give it a shot. The kit was well detailed and had great photo etched parts. Just a standard build as you drove it out of the tank factory.

A couple of years ago I gathered up a few models for the annual IPMS show in Tulsa OK. The tank was one. The lesson learned was that tanks should be muddy, dinged and shot up. Out of four entries in that class I was fourth. Back to shiney new airplanes as displayed in museums!

Just me I guess. The other tanks were awesome of course and I'm even working on a battle weary Stuka dive bomber to try to be competitive.

Be patient, pic problems.

Real nice work with that camo job, looks freehand right ?

There is nothing wrong with a clean tank, heavy weathering is only a must if it's in a diorama, otherwise, however you want to depict it.

Hey Tojo, thanks, and the camo job was freehand but I admit I did go over it many times. There was a good map in the instructions. Max

Freehand? You're a better man than me. I'll second all of Tojos' comments.

Nice work! Camo looks great and I don't see any seams or issues.

Frankly, you're better off starting with a clean tank and getting all the little stuff right and then you can move onto stuff like dirt and mud. I've seen plenty of models (including my own) with nice weathering ruined by simple errors like floating road wheels or seams.

The only thing I can see that I would mark you down for is the EP marks on the spare track links. You did an excellent job on the painting and I don't see any seams present anywhere. I detect a very slight bit of silvering on the decals, but that happens a lot with first time armor builders. For some reason noone ever thinks that the same processes work with tanks as well as airplanes lol.

Try a drop of liquid cement on those and they will stick... like glue. lol

Seriously, just a small drop and leave it alone. Walk away and don't look again for at least 5 minutes. Messing with it more than once until the glue dries will mess up the decal. The LC disolves the carrier film and lets the decal set like actual paint. That will take care of any silvering. That's one of my secrets. Its not for the feignt of heart.

If thats your only armour build, you should really be building more, thats sweet. The joy of not entering comps is that you can build for yourself not to try and please otehrs. I dirty my armour up because a) i build dio's and a factory fresh finish on the Russian steppe would not look right and b) because i want to. If you wanna build em clean, build em clean.

And you mentioned a Stuka. Please, don't be shy with it. post pics.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Good looking modern kitty, I agree with the others get the basics down first and build it as you want it. Nothing wrong with a clean vehicle, unfortunately they don't stay that way long, usually from the wash rack to parking area at the end of exercises. Great model.

we're modelers it's what we do
