DAK PZKW ii Done
Posted by ManCityFan on Sunday, June 18, 2017 7:15 PM

Started this a long time ago, but between back issues, a mason, and working on a FW 190, it sat for a bit.  Here are the pics.

This is my first 1/35 armor kit completion.  Very easy to put together, as you know.  Wanted to get an overall "in the desert" dustiness.  Was planning to try some oil washes, but had a brain malfunction, and skipped that step.  This is just drybrushing and pigments.  Sorry the pics are not great.  Only have my iphone for pics.  Hope to get a digital camera at some point.

Comments welcome, as I want to get better.

Thanks for looking,

D

Looks darn good to me.

Just fix that little 'ol track glitch and you've got it nailed.

Doh!  Missed that.  That is where the tracks get joined.  Not totally sure how to fix that.  CA, or try more heat?

Thanks for picking that out.

I think Disaster Master is referring to you have your tracks on opposed. One is oriented one way, and the other side in the opposite way. M vs. W on the link orientation. Reverse one of them to correct that.

No need to worry about the phone camera for your photos. What I would suggest is using a plain background to remove any distractions from your subject. A piece of poster board, or a plain solid color bed sheet draped over something will bring all the attention to your build and not the background.

Well, guess I coulda been a bit more clear on that. The port side track should be reversed and a bit of work done on the link up(s).

The track material would dictate the type of fix needed to reconnect the tracks properly.

This turned out nice and should be worth some aftermarket tracks if the kit version doesn't work out for you.

That kit is a classic!  Dusty, weathered look is very nice!  You did a great job on it!

Thats really well done, dust effects are spot on.

Tracks should be an easy fix with those old Tamiya ones.

Well that was a complete rookie mistake.  Embarrassed  Will fix that tonight.  Won't make that mistake again.

Thanks Bish, Stik and DM.

Thank you for the compliment.  African Desert Dust pigment made the weathering quite a bit easier.

Yeah she looks good to me. The track shouldn't be too hard to pop off and replace. Nice work with the dusty, sandy look.

Quick question, how did you apply the pigment.

I started by using a desert wash by Vallejo.  Dip the brush in the wash and then pigment, and apply.  Then I went over some spots with just a wet brush to try to make it a little more uniform.  Finally, just pigment on a dry brush.

Thats what i was thinking. Just an idea ofr the next build, especially if you want to show build up of dust particulally around wheel rims and on sharp angles. Mix some pigment with a small bit of water and a tiny drop of washing up liquid and apply it. It will look messy. But once dry you can use a stiff old brush to remove as much or as little as you want.

You would be surprised at how much dust can build up on armour in just a short time.

D, I'm fairly new to building armor myself.  Your desert dusting is awesome!  Really looks great.  LOL!  I would never had picked out the track issue.  The armor guys here are super!  I have learned so much from all of them.  But I still have not been brave enough to do indiv. link tracks.  Embarrassed.

Great work D!

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will try it.  There were spots on the model where the pigment showed brush streaks, and was not the effect I was looking for...looked more like mud than dust.  So this is a very helpful suggestion.

Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment.  You are right.  The armor guys here are super.  Getting positive feedback from them is pretty satisfying.  At least I am on the right track (pun intended).  Stick out tongue

Tracks are fixable, so no worries, but still embarassed that I missed it.

No need. I've been building German armour for longer than i care to remember. On every build i spend quite a bit of time checking referance books to ensure the tracks go on the right way. Your not the first and you certainly won't be the last.

Although technically, you want them the other way around, at least by convention;

Oh Censored Censored Censored.  LOL.  I should have pulled up a pic like this one before switching them.  Not sure I will fix it, but I probably will, as this is the kind of thing that will pick at my brain.

Thanks for the fantastic pic.  That tank sure is dusty!
