If you time it right you can get the whole thing put togther with solvent glue and have it still be a little bendable when you finish, so you can adjust the pieces.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Work in sections we call "runs". I start with the ground run (the portion that is underside the road wheels). Then work up the run to the sprocket because you will have to fit the individual links around the sprocket teeth.

Next I work the top run towards the idler wheel. Once you have that, then work down towards the ground run. This is where you can adjust the tracks to make up for any errors.

It's also the spot on a real tank when track tension is adjusted.

tank tread question
Posted by plane nuts on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 9:39 AM

I am building a 1:48 scale Tamiya tank.  The treads come in segments of different lengths and the instructions clearly show the order in which the pieces are to be placed.  This may be a stupid question, but is there any rule of thumb regarding where to start?  After they are glued together, the angles between the segments are pretty much fixed.  So if the angles are wrong because the treads were positioned improperly prior to gluing, the final pieces may not align correctly.  Or am I just overthinking the whole thing?
