Help? - Tamiya 1/35 Panzer II F/G

Well, at long last, I've completed this build. It's the first i've done since childhood, basically. I ended up doing a F variant.

I'd love for you to take a look and let me know what you think. However, I can't figure out how the hell to attach photos to this post!

Ideas?

IIRC, there's a representation of the head pad on the inner surface of the hatch. this would be brown(?) leather with the exterior colour around it.

Inside of the hatch is gray.

Anyone have an idea of what color the inside/underside of the turret hatch should be painted? If at all?

That's the only interior surface that is exposed on the model.

Apply your gloss coat and then the decals before weathering. Not sure what decal setting soloutions you are thinking of getting, i use micro set and sol. I apply a bit of set to where the decal is going and then some more on top once the decal is on. Sol is only really for decals on very irregular areas.

As for the tools, i paint mine off the vehicle and add them after filters and washes and before dusting and pigments.

Update on my Panzer II

I painted it Grey and decided to use Testors Enamel "Panzer Grey." I still have to paint all the tools, wheels, etc. I think I have all the colors needed for that.

My question is: Should I apply the decals now, then do the rest or wait to do the decals dead last? Speaking of decals, I've heard of using decal setting stuff, applying gloss coats before, etc. Any advice on that?

Another thing: when it's all done, should I spray it with some type of sealer or something?

Ok, I think I have a plan on how i'm going to paint this tank and detail, etc.

Regarding weathering, I'd like to use the hairspray method for chipping. My question is this: Will the hairspray method work with enamel paints? I'm assuming it would only work with acrylics?

Great advice, thanks! I didn't think about the turret thing.

Splurge and go for the Tamiya German Grey rattle can. Be sure to paint the turret seperately from the hull so you can reach the downward-facing areas on the front and also not accidently stick the turret to the hull.

Not sure what paint brand you use, but tamiya German Grey is a close match, it what they recomend for their kits. Though it can be a pain to brush on such large areas.

Ok, I finished the construction phase of the build. Yayy! Photos attached...

As you can see, I decided to do the F variant. I'm going to paint it Grey. (Or, I guess I should say, "Panzer Grey.")

Can anyone recommend paint brand/products, weathering products that they like or would be best for this kit? Bear in mind I don't have an airbrush yet, so it'll have to be spray paints or something like that.

Also, the decal instructions are in Japanese. So I'm not sure what decal arrangement to use for a grey paint scheme. Photo of the instructions attached as well... Thoughts?

If so I think that the only difference that Tamiya make in the instruction for this release (from 1971) is that their G has the turret bin attached where their F should omitt this and have a vision slit instead.

So your decission is turret bin or not rather then F or G.
I am not sure if anyone of the Pz II experts can hammer out the deveolpment history.

I would probably check some reference pictures and decide where and when I want the vehicle to be depicted. Check the reference for how the rest of the stowage bins look compared to your kit since you can not omit the main bin that is molded on to the track guard..

Personally I follow Bish's example and try to get the main hull as complete as possible including base paintwork and and then I go for the tools and small parts before weathering. Then again I usually lose my patience at this stage and bin the kit :)

Despite being hopelessly obsolete, generally worn out and largely converted to SPGs, panzerjäger or stripped of their turrets for fortification use and the chassis used as drivers training or munitions vehicles, a fair number of Panzer II soldiered on into the late war. This service was obviously in a greatly reduced capacity, generally relegated to anti-partisan duties or observation vehicles, (some converted into Pz.Beob.wg.II). Jentz's Panzer Truppen, Vol 2, page 276, still show 386, 2cm-armed Panzer II on inventory for October, 1944, the last month these stats. were listed. These survivors could have been, in theory, repainted in standard late war 3-tone scheme or simply left in whatever original scheme they had. There are several photos of Panzer II F in Italy with Sturmpanzer Abt. 217 in 3-tone schemes, just as an example;

2 options for colours for that kit, Pz Grey or the desert scheme. Do you have a preffered paint range as it difficult to suggest colours without knowing what paint you are useing.

As far as your second question, people have different approachs. I build as much of the vehcile that the main camo colour as i can, usually leaving off tools, wheels tracks and so on. But otehrs will build the whole thing including all the smaler bits and paint them on the kit. You just need to experiment and find which is best for you.

I have only built a small number of armor kits but generally I assemble everything including the hand tools then paint the entire kit with the base color. Then I hand-paint the tools and other small details. Please post pictures when you’re done so we can all see your work! 

That kit actually can't be a G. The suspension was different.

For my two bits, I'd paint it Grey.

As to color callouts, Tamiya usually has them for their paint line, and in the front end of the instruction pages.  Usually a paint scheme or several on the very back end of the insstructions.  Can't be of much more help other than that.
