Panda Stryker Dragoon
Posted by LonCray on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 12:12 PM

Well, apparently Panda is going to be the first out with a Stryker Dragoon model.  I would've preferred AFV Club or Trumpeter (or even Academy) but Panda it is.  Opinions?

Time will tell, but it should be pretty nice.  Newer Panda models are quite good.  They have come a long way in the last couple years.  It would be really nice if it has an interior as well.

I've done some work on one of their ZTZ-99 kits and I'm really impressed so far. I'd judge them as slightly better than Trumpeter. Detail wise I'd consider them a little behind AFV Club but much easier to build, they don't have the AFV Club injection pin marks everywhere to sand out. Probably not quite as good as new Academy or Tamiya but I'm very happy with the kit.

I'm torn.  On the one hand, I really want a Stryker Dragoon.  On the other hand, I've got a Panda MRAP that's basically spare parts now because it's so bad.  I haven't the skills to build contest-goers, much less contest-winners, but at least I can assemble a model to look something like the box art some of the time.  That MRAP completely confounded me.  I'll take your word that newer Panda models are better (they'd have to be) and I will end up getting the Dragoon because I can't resist a Stryker model.  But I'll have my fingers crossed until I get that box open.

Lon, sorry I can't help you anymore than this. The ZTZ-99 is the only Panda kit I own. As the latest spiffest new Chinese tank maybe Panda as patriotic Chinese went out of their way to do a super nice job on the kit? Or maybe a boxy tank is just easier to mold than something more complex like the MRAP.

I thought the FSM review of the Panda MRAP seemed pretty positive. Kinda disappointing since a vet approached our club about building one for his son who served on one in Afganistan.

I agree with the comment about how awful the Panda MRAP is. There have been very few kits I've thrown out virtually unbuilt and that's one of them. I have nothing good to say about it and will avoid Panda as a result.

Ouch, when the vet's dad came by our club and asked someone to build the MRAP his son served on I guess I dodged the bullet there by offering to build the figures and let my friend Mike build the MRAP!

I'd like to get one. I just find the name choice to be odd; Dragoons are historically mounted infantrymen (as opposed to foot soldiers) that ride to battle on a horse, but dismount to fight. Unlike cavalry that by design fights while mounted. You get the mobility of cavalry, but the massed firepower of dismounted infantry.

I always thought the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle should have been the Bradley Dragoon.

Haven't tried a Panda kit yet.
