Leaf camo...or topiary ?
Posted by ogreb on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 1:47 PM

I kinda like the way it looks but I'm not sure how realistic it is. Just finishing up this Tiger. First model I have completed in 20 years. ( just started modeling again a couple of months ago )

I still need to get in there with a Micro pen and highlight a few veins on the leaves.

Wow!, I'd say you haven't forgotten much over 20 years. Great work with details and paint. I can see a further diorama base in this project. Keep up the good work.

Thanks.

This is the diorama it goes on.

The Stewart is not done...I said the Tiger is first model I've gotten so completly finished..I never said I didn't have more WIP. Too many in fact...ugh.

Still have ton of work to do on the diorama.  8 Figures, finish the Stewart, mud and afix the Stewart and Tiger.

That floaty tank thing on dioramas bugs the heck out of me. When I'm finished they will look like a tank on a surface should and be permantly afixed. ( turn the diorama over and everything stays )

Seal and dust it etc.

And not to mention totally finish the Tiger. 2 more days max...I am so amped !! ( 2 days for the Tiger...maybe 2 weeks for the rest.)

Have a bad back can only model a few hours a day.

I'm still pretty excited about modeling again though.

My 2 cents... add more foliage... a LOT more. Also, get rid of the rust on the tow cables, those usually lightly greased to keep in best condition.

Your paint scheme is a bit unusual, with no dark yellow base noticeable. But I do like all the mud. That is common on vehicles in Europe.

I do like the foliage on the Tiger, thats really well done. AsStik says, the camo scheme is a bit unusual.

I have to disagree on the 'floaty track thing'. Real tank, even Tigers, don't always sink into a surface, so the idea that a tank 'should' be finxed 'into' the base is, IMHO, wrong.

I live the work you have done on the base, though i have to say its a bit big for my taste. But the work is superb.

Yeah the yellow did disappear lol Even though the base color was grey and then camoed with yellow, green and rotbraun it all just kinda got lost and muddled.

The rust is  just chalk it will fade as soon as I hit it with Dullcoat. It'll be more of a dark red brown.

The floaty bit is where you can actually see the gap between the model and the base. Like the tank was just set down on the diorama and not actually a part of it.Where it looks like you could slide a piece of paper in there. I wasn't talking about sinking it in..just connecting them.

As for foilage...hmmm. I might fluff out the ones there but I don't think I'm going add it to more areas. Maybe a branch or two sticking out the baggage area.

Thanks for the advice.

EDIT

You can now see how a little Dullcoat subdued the rust / chalk..when I dullcoat the whole tank it won't look so reddish.

The Tiger had a bright vibrant camo when I started like this Stug ( Which I'm going to redo...I was just testing my new airbrush on it. ) But some how it got lost. Some of yellow should reappear after dull coating though.

I also didn't want either tank ( Stewart or Tiger ) to stand out too much as they are only  a part of the sceene unfolding on the diorama. It's the soldiers and tankers are the main focus. Thats' why the soldiers and tankers will be standing on lighter colored ground, to make them stand out more and why the diorama will be framing in the scene by being darker around the edges. It will have a nice dark walnut stained frame also .

Kinda hard to explain. You can see the edges of the diorama are dark red and black while the center area is more bright and lighter. There will be 3 GIs running next to the Stewart attempting to fire or find cover. Meanwhile the German tankers are trying to get back to the Tiger. The tankers climbing or in the tank will be wearing more camoflage ( hence they will stand out more against the dark color of the tank ) while the ones in the open will be wearing more black so they stand out against the brighter area. The figures in the diorama are just place holders.

And thats another reason I don't really want to add more leaf as it would center your attention more on the Tiger then the scene unfolding.

It will look cool...the guy running will be in the middle of dropping jerry cans...one will actually be in mid fall. ( held a few mm above the ground by a small stiiff piece of fishing line.) There are two buckets of potatoes on the turret..one will be in the middle of being knocked over by the commander sticking out of the turret. So the bucket will be halfway between upright and knocked over so the potatoes are are just starting to cascade out.

Then after placing the Tiger I still need to dust it with ash and debris and chunks of burnt wood and a few bricks...it did just drive through the back of the building.

Make sense ?

Looks pretty darn good to me!!!

Nice work on the tanks and I love the base. Nice muddy grimy look there!!!

And I love the idea of the running guy dropping the jerry cans and the potatoes!

A few last pics and I'll move this over to diorama section.

You can now see more of the grey base paint on the Tiger. And dull coat did ease the redness.

I added a few placeholder figures...the only German not caught off guard is the paratrooper with the panzershrek. The other paratrooper ( who should have been on watch in the upstairs of the cafe is passed out drunk )

I always start my tigers in grey in tribute for my grandfather who was a loader on a Tiger called the Grau Hexen.

See you guys in a couple of weeks. Should be totally done and framed.

And on the Stewart it will look like it just plowed into the drums with the hedge cutter so fuel drums will be everywhere.

Big ? Man you would have hated my Kursk then.

1/ 35 scale 8 foot by 8 foot. Tanks slugging it out, ramming into each other, men fighting hand to hand in trenches, mg emplacements, mortar pits, part of a village, minefields, AT guns even a smoke generator for shells holes and parts of the village.

Pure chaos

Or my Sebastopol one 2 1/35 scale Morsers, command center, communications, mess tent, tents, part of a river, rails for shells and powder, rail car, trucks, ammo dump,motorcycles...even slit trenches.

Wish I had the room to build like that again.

My ex wife took a baseball bat to them during the divorce saying you love them more then me...yadda yadda...

I tend to focus my dio's on one subject and try and suggest more going on beyond the edge of the scene rather than try and show everything. The big dio's i have seen have some stunning work but its easy to get lost when there is so much going on. And when there are muliple vehicle kits, spacing and realisim tends to go out the window for the sack of trying to get everything on the base. But thats just down to my own taste.

This is beautiful and sounds like you have a solid plan,, would love to have seen your other ones before the destruction. I build mine the same as Bish I don't have a ton of room so I focus on small scenes biggest ones are about 12"x12"
