All-new tool, slide molded smoke dischargers, gun barrel rifling, ACAV-style armor for the commander, anti-RPG screen for the front hull, three figures, Viet Nam-era, all arriving some time in the winter. Perhaps an ODS boxing will appear later.
Hopefully this will be the definitive Sheridan, leaving the ancient Tamiya and the more recent but flawed Academy kits behind. No mention about the tracks. Will it be rubber bands? I'd like hard plastic link and length with molded-in sag. I've got a set of Friul metal indy links, just in case.

I don't build much Vietnam era armour but it's great to see Tamiya go back and rework vintage kits like this.

Yeah the Sheridan was not a very successful design, but it was cool looking! It had a clam shaped turret and a weird rotating driver’s hatch.
I hope Tamiya continues to replace their aging kits with new ones. I’d like them to do a new West German Marder APC. There isn’t a modern kit of it, and the RoG kit does not count. Come to think of it, a new tool Jagdpanzer Kanone 90 would also be most wecome.
And while I’m daydreaming, a PACV Viet Nam era hovercraft in 1/35 and plastic would be crazy cool. But I think only 2 were used, and Mr. Tamiya does not like to do prototypes and one-offs. But he does make exceptions like the Do-335.
Very cool! I’d prefer link and length tracks with molded in sag over their gluable flexible soft plastic single length tracks. Looks like a nice kit judging from the CAD photos.

It's been platered on Facebook since last month. I've noticed the various model group pages I've joined have pretty much covered just about any model news out there. Modeling forums are becoming like the model magazine review sections; still useful but suffer from jetlag when it comes to breaking news.

Yes it is nice to get Viet Nam era armor figs. Injection plastic 1960-1980 US armor crew are very thin on the ground. Come to think of it, armor crew from any country in that time frame are hard to come by.
It can't have been too unsuccessful; it was in service from 1967 to 1996 or so; that's better than a lot of military equipment that isn't the B52 or M113 or Huey helicopter. A new model from Tamiya is great news!
It was introduced during the end of the light/medium/heavy concept. The final "true" heavy tank, the M103 didn't really warrant all the extra logistics for a tank that was marginally better than the current medium. The light tanks were too light to fight in the Cold War era mass tank formations. The only reason it served throughout the 1980s and into the early 90s was that there was a lone airborne tank battalion and the rest of the tanks went to the NTC OPFOR to replicate Soviet armor.

True enough. It was the only Tank ever parachuted into combat, as far as I can learn. Ten were dropped in the opening phase of the Panama Invasion, Operation Just Cause. Those that survived the drop and the others that were pre positioned in country and went into combat gave great fire support against the PDF. A 152mm HE round can be quite effective.
They also has an extensive use at NTC playing OPFOR bad guys, using VISMOD kits to turn them into multiple Soviet types- T-72s, BMP-1s, ZSU-23-4s, 2S1s. Some were better than others in looking like the real deal at a distance. The Army equivelant of Red Flag and Top Gun played out in the Mojave Desert. Much in MOPP 2 to 4... Fun fun fun!
