Looking at my Squadron and Osprey books on the M3 Mediums, there is no mention of them serving in combat by any of the M3 user nations. US forces used the M3 in combat North Africa from November of 1942 until May of 1943 and the M3A5 at Makin island in November of 1943. There was no more use of the M3 Medium as a gun tank in US service. Commonwealth and Soviet forces used various M3 versions longer (up until the end of the war in Asia) and more widely, but no mention or photos of the cast hull A1 with those armies is found.

I've only seen it  in training, with two diferent hull hatch positions. The upper hinges were changed so the upper hull hatch would not be in the way when opened.  Noticed it in the Hunnicut book many years ago.

Takom M3A1 Lee (Cast hull) Question?
Posted by udel09 on Saturday, September 29, 2018 7:12 PM

Hey everybody!

I have searched the forum but couldn’t find any information regarding the M3A1 Lee, specifically, the cast hull version. I recently purchased Takom’s new kit and was contemplating decal options but all I can find is state side training photos. Did any of the 300 cast hull M3’s make it to an operational combat theater (other than the CDL version)? Thanks for the replies! The kit looks fantastic in the box and I will post pictures when I eventually get it built.
