The CSAR hoist for the Chinook didn't arrive yesterday, so this morning as I lay in bed, scratching my... thinking stuff, I thought about what I wanted to build next. I've had a number of project in mind to start and the Leopard AS1 has been on the list for a while.Leopard AS1 27739 Seymour RSL, Victoria. Photo by me
The kit I'll be using is the Meng 1/35 Leopard 1 A3/A4,
with the Legend AS1Leopard conversion that will give me most of the correct parts for a 1997-2007 era Tank, and the Creation Workshop workable tracks. I'll also be ordering some decals and maybe a replacement gun barrel from Mouse House Australia.
Part one of the build involves assembling the lower hull including the bumpers and torsion bar suspension. I really like how the suspension works. It's making me want to display it on a rocky base so I can have the suspension and tracks in a posed position. In the late 80's the bumper stops were replaced with a newer type that that depicted with the kit parts, however, with the skirts in place, none of it will be seen, so I will be saving myself the $14 cost of the Mouse House update set in this case.
Next up are the wheels, fairly straightforward, I'll be saving putting them on until the hull is painted and the tracks assembled.
Then it was onto the rear of the tank. There are a few parts that will be enhanced with photo-etch here. While I have prepared those parts, I was not in the mood to do any PE folding and glueing today so you'll have to wait to see them. My 1mm flat micro chisel was invaluable here.
Onto the upper hull. So much of the many modifications required to this kit are needed here. I'll be taking my time to get them right. For today, I was just working on the kit parts that are correct.
A test fit of the upper and lower hulls, just to see how it looks.
That's it for today. I'm off to IMAX tomorrow for the Remembrance Day presentation of Peter Jacksons restoration project 'The shall not grow old' so I don't know if I'll get much if anything more done here, but I will try to get a few hours in, in the morning before I go.
