Tamiya Stug Advice Needed
Posted by ModelNerd on Saturday, January 05, 2019 6:41 PM

I have this old Tamiya Stug kit in the stash and thought I'd give it a go. However it has those nasty vinyl tracks, which don't always look so good. Does anyone make aftermarket track links for this kit? I'll just say it up front that I know very little about armor modeling (I'm typically a plane guy), so wouldn't even know where to look for such an item.

Thanks-

- Mark

It's really pretty nice kit.  The track works well for me, but I'm not that picky.

This one is the mid-90's new tool kit, not the mouldy old '70's one. It's got the later gluable tracks with detail on the inner surface.

If I was to swap out the tracks, I'd love to go for the winter tracks with the grouser extensions, just cos they look cool.

Actually the tracks in my kit are flexible black vinyl.

They are indeed, but they are a different formula of vinyl to the old ones. The older grey type were virtually impervious to most solvents and you had to join the ends using teh "hot screwdriver" method. The newer type can be simply glued together using regular model cement or CA.

Note that the newer (black) type has been said to disintegrate some time after completion if painted (or washed) with anything stronger than acrylic paints. No oil washes, enamel paints or lacquers, or you may have a bad day somewhere down the line after it's all finished.

Bah! I built my Tamiya Pz III L many moons ago and the tracks are totally fine. Depends on what you mean by stronger? I sprayed enamel black and the acrylic over that and then used terpentine washes.
