Rob Gronovious wanted me to pass this along...

"I have not been able to log onto FSM in a number of days on either my laptop or my phone.

I'm not even able to create a new account using a different email address nor can I even use the "change password" option to see if that will help.

I did try the "contact us" link, but have not received a response in a number of days, perhaps due to the weekend, but it's still been a while.

Thanks,

Rob"

Hopefully FSM can fix his issues soon.

I would up sending an email to the IT person in the "Login Problems" thread

Mind, I had also already cleared all the cookies off my machine, and updated browsers.

I never got an email response from enash@finescale.com

But, I was able to log in using all of my normal username & p/w

Hopefully we can get him back on line.I

Hopefully things will clear up soon.

I couldn't get on for a couple days back then even following all of Ms. Nash's advice. Then the IT guys must have changed something since I got back on without any issues.

Yes, I got a very similar message from Carlos (stikpusher).

After clearing all sorts of stuff off of my computer, in the process losing a fair number of useful saved passwords; with no effect: one morning it was all ok.

I am sure it's all at their end.

Dissappointing to see the problems aren't entirely going away.

It has to be something like that. I tried three different browsers (Pale Moon, Firefox, and Chrome) and couldn't get on with any of them. After I was able to get back on the forum again all three work fine now.

The problem is all on their end. I was unable to login for two weeks, despite various attempts on my part. Once I saw the message about the login problem and responded to the FSM request: mailto:enash@finescale.com , they fixed the problem within a couple of days, for myself at least...Hmm

I was contacted by Aaron Skinner via Facebook messaging. One suggestion he gave me actually worked.

He told me someone was able to access their account information from the home page, then change their username and password on that page.

I did go to the account page, the one with the account number and billing info, change my user name to what my user name is there and then log into the forums with that new password I changed at the same time.

What a royal pita.

I've been involved in software engineering for my entire adult life.  None of this makes sense.  I can only assume FSM outsourced the development of the site and they lack the skills to provide adequate operational support.

Thanks,

John

Just got a message from Bob "Sprueone" Protoreplifab who is also now locked-out.

Glad Rob got back on-line.  Hopefully the others can soon too.

Yeah, good to see you back online. If I'd been locked out for that long I think I'd have said to blazes with the site... Sad

They will if FSM’s incompetent IT staff can’t solve these ongoing issues. All these excuses from clearing your cookies cache, going incognito using another browser and now changing your password? Solving the problem with these band aid suggestions is not going to cut it. Do something right for a change. If FSM IT guys can’t solve it, find somebody who can!

Success! I was able to reset my password this morning. Of course the whole reason for needing to do so still has me wondering why...

I just went to the Scale Auto forum. They have been having the same login problems. I think that the login problems have affected all of the Kalmbach forums.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

I agree, I've been here since 2002 and was ready to give up. My next step was to try to create a new account on my son's brand new laptop he got for Christmas, no chance for bad cookies or deleting browser history on that computer. Fortunately, the account password change worked.

Agree, but I'm already "in the hills" as my replies keep disappearing into the ether. why bother?

That has been a common occurance for me as well. The chance of what I have just typed disappearing increases significantly when it is a more involved response involving several paragraphs and lots of answers. Ones like this one will post right away.

If I type a long response, I've gotten into the habit of copying the text before I try posting it so I can just paste and re-reply if it vanishes.

A few of the forums I've used are now Tap Talk forums. I think I like that forum set up.

EDIT: LOL this response hiccupped as well.

Rob, thanks for clearing up the mystery of the disappearing text. I thought I was doing something to cause it. I've been having all sorts of "Ghost in the Machine" problems. Not having experienced this type of bug before, I wasn't sure what was happening. Confused

Angry

I get that every so often as well. Usually on longer responses that I have spent way too much time preparing. Or when I go searching for an image to help illustrate my point. I’ll return to a blank page. So then I curse and just skip the answer altogether since I don’t want the same thing to happen again... I always though that it was my devices, but if it’s happening to others here as well.

Yeah, if my response mysteriously vanishes before I get a chance to post it, sometimes, I'll just shrug and move on without replying.

I too have had prepared responses simply vanish once I hit the submit button (?) it doesn't happen often, but it has occurred more than a couple times. So I begin wondering if I create it again to resubit it with the risk of having duplicate responses hit the thread (?). So I end up not trying the resubmit.....

That is often my response, too.

In fairness to FSM, I've seen this problem of longer posts disappearing mysteriously on most forums I have frequented over the years. A common thing folks do is use a Office or some word processor (do we still call them that???) for longer posts, then copy and paste into the forum. I've been to lazy and stubborn to do that myself.

Highly recommended. Or, type the response in a draft email that has auto save, then cut, paste and delete the draft.

I can only assume FSM outsourced the development of the site

As a guess, Kalmbach outsourced their server capacity, and failed to map how permissions were granted on hardware they did not own.

Kalmbach is running a bunch of fora, as they are all about modeling, they are photo-heavy, this is not ideal for elegant informantion management huge files needing ling-term storage never are).

The Photobucket debacle can not have been pleasant, either.

I'm still slightly annoyed that the forum architecture Kalmbach appears married to does not use https, but remains in the clear for account name & pw transmission.  There are better ways to handle that now.

But, since they are using "blind" account authentication, the p/w is "hashed" and the hash value is stored with the data, rather than wherever the administrator is located.  So, if the remote location changes something, the adminsitrator may not "see" a problem at all, and the users are unable to communicate it, either.

It's not a way to run a railroad, as the old expression goes.

As to the system hiccuping and dumping responses, I suspect that there are two things happening.  One is that the draft autosave has either a timing or a character length limit no one has much examined.  There's alos an issue where you can keystroke the "back" browser key, which will wipe a response clean (which has happened to me all too many times).

My 2¢, others' will vary.

The response in which I typed an edit in bold, I had just highlighted and copied the text using my cursor and then hit the "submit your reply" button.

The forum hiccupped and my response vanished. But since I had just copied the text, I just opened another response and pasted the text and added the EDIT in bold.

My response was typed within a minute or two and was not lengthy at all. Fortunately, I'm in the habit of copying my responses here because it happens on occasion.
