I can only assume FSM outsourced the development of the site
As a guess, Kalmbach outsourced their server capacity, and failed to map how permissions were granted on hardware they did not own.
Kalmbach is running a bunch of fora, as they are all about modeling, they are photo-heavy, this is not ideal for elegant informantion management huge files needing ling-term storage never are).
The Photobucket debacle can not have been pleasant, either.
I'm still slightly annoyed that the forum architecture Kalmbach appears married to does not use https, but remains in the clear for account name & pw transmission. There are better ways to handle that now.
But, since they are using "blind" account authentication, the p/w is "hashed" and the hash value is stored with the data, rather than wherever the administrator is located. So, if the remote location changes something, the adminsitrator may not "see" a problem at all, and the users are unable to communicate it, either.
It's not a way to run a railroad, as the old expression goes.
As to the system hiccuping and dumping responses, I suspect that there are two things happening. One is that the draft autosave has either a timing or a character length limit no one has much examined. There's alos an issue where you can keystroke the "back" browser key, which will wipe a response clean (which has happened to me all too many times).
My 2¢, others' will vary.
