The right Jagdpanzer IV for a Normandy setting
Posted by Hobbie on Friday, March 1, 2019 4:30 AM

I've been wanting to depict a Jagdpanzer IV in Normandy for a long time ; those models were, according to pictures, L/48 (short barrel) with zimmerit coating. Profiles found online called it  "ausf. F early" if I'm not mistaken

This Dragon kit seemed perfect, and already zimmerit-coated, and luckily available in a shop close to home :

...but I'm having second thoughts due to the mention "July 1944 production" ; would it fit the part? Is there any obvious part that would need changing? Dragon kits are usually chockful of spare parts, would there be everything needed there?

There is also Dragon's 1997 Jagdpanzer reboxed by Revell (with France 1944 decals) but it needs an aftermarket zimmerit set ; feasible but bothersome, maybe more expensive in the end...

Any advice from panzer buffs? :-)

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in the mud : after a while, you realize the pig likes it.

Not 100% on this but my guess is that you should be able to backdate this to June 44 or earlier with what dragon has extra in the kit

This thread addresses some of the known variations among those vehicles serving in Normandy;

The kit gun mantlet is the wrong shape and the barrel is too large in diameter, Dragon simply used the mantlet from the L/70 kit and chopped down the L/70 gun to length without consideration of the correct dimensions.
