That's not a bad idea. I was simply thinking of kit bashing lol.

Thanks, Rob.

Did the Revell kit come with the basic M48A2 and a separate sprue for the GA2 version? If so, you'd still be able to build a straight kit from the leftover Revell base kit and just steal the GA2 stuff for the AFV kit.

Id have to look at the two in my stash again, but I think the GA2 kit does not have everything needed to do a basic A2. No 90mm gun, M1 cupola, the original bustle rack, etc.

I wonder if Revell would sell the GA2 parts sprue separately like some companies do?

How does the newer Revell M48A2 compare to the Dragon M48A3/A5 kits?

The Dragon kits have more petite detail, especially on areas like the bustle rack, fenders, grills, etc.. And more intricate engineering for those areas as well, mainly due to the multi version approach for Dragon (A1 thru A5). I have both types in my stash but have yet to build either, so I cant comment on fit or ease of assembly. Revell did err in giving the engine deck “hood” area a cast texture. But that is not too hard to correct. The Revell vinyl tracks look to be thicker and more stiff than the Dragon DS plastic tracks.

The vinyl tracks are stiffer than the Dragon DS tracks and more like Tamiya vinyl tracks. You can get paint on them, but I highly recommend the Krylon fusion based paints for a primer. So far, that what I've found that sticks.

I still have made no forward progress with this kit being recently distracted with searching for new employment and sanding the crap out of a Lindberg 1/48 Me 262 that has become a putty monster.

Last night I opened up a 1/35 Tamiya Leopard A4 and began construction on that as well.

I apologise, as I'm all over the place. I'm still lacking focus and working on the dinner table. My desk is covered in junk still.

I'll update when I have something new to show you guys.

The GA2 doesn't have the Basic A2 parts sprues. So no, you won't be able to build an A2 and use the GA2 parts for another project without relegating the GA2 kit to the spares bin.

There are probably resin GA2 parts to get to add to the AFV kit. I know I have the ancient Lo Models GA2 parts I was adding to the old Monogram (now Revell) M48A2. They aren't worth adding to any model better than the old Tamiya M48A3, which isn't the correct variant to begin with.

Legends makes a resin GA2 conversion set. I pulled my Revell GA2 out a bit ago and had a look at the sprues. No 90mm main gun or M1 .50 cal. cupola. The GA2 parts are broken down into two small sprues so that one can be included with a basic A2 kit to alter that into the Bundeswehr specific 90mm gun tank mods- smoke mortars, bustle rack w/armored housing for German IR searchlight, and that light. The other sprue has the new mantlet, cupola w/MG-3, and 105mm gun tube.

AK Interactive enamel Black sludge wash brought out some details and leveled the NATO brown down a lot.

I cleaned that up and matte coated it. That evened out the overall tone, but now it looks too dark. Further dusting with some Tamiya powders should take that darkness down a notch.

No details have been filled in yet and I haven't finished the wheels either. That's the next step I suppose.

Yeah that's some nice work there. Love the camo on the M48.

Thanks, gentlemen.

There's something to be said about the look of an M-48 with that huge L7A3 105mm main gun sticking out there. Same main gun as the Loeopard A1 sitting next to it, but without the stabilization the Leopard incorporated.

Such a fascinating progression of technology.

Dad says he used to see these in the field on occasion when he was in Graf. The Germans had a habbit of removing the restrictors and they would fly down roads at full throttle lol.

When I tanked on the M48A5, we had to use the "short halt" to fire the main gun since we didn't have the ability to fire on the move. We also had to learn how to engage using a searchlight tank. Probably one of the worst duties you had to pull.

I've seen videos of the pop-up, shoot, and back down.

Gunnery by seachlight doesn't even sound fun.

Its fine if you’re not the searchlight tank.... and as long as nobody is shooting back...

But night live fire is always quite the show...

A searchlight tank illuminates the targets for other tanks to engage. The big problem occurs when the gunner of the firing tank traces the beam to the searchlight tank and then fires at it by accident instead of following the beam to the target.

One of the many reasons the search light tanks were always behind burms. Had an incindent at Graf, where the crew firing followed the beam back to the searchlight tank. Luckly it was a coax engagement. Chipped the new paint on the tank, and shot up the searchlight. Crew was buttoned up.

Nothing is impossible as long as somebody else has to do it.

I resprayed using slightly darker colors and less feathering on the pattern. I'm much happier with the way it turned out this time.

I added the searchlight cable and started detail painting. Headlights and tail lights painted in.

That's all for now.

I got into a good push with this one today and I'm really close to finishing it. I snagged some fuel cans from the Academy accessories set and one of them is Isreali, but l like the contrast it brings.

I resprayed the road wheels and found that a Voyager Models wheel mask was a perfect fit.

Not much more blocking to do and I'll be able to do some light weathering to bring up the realism a bit.

One of the rubber band tracks started breaking so I pulled out a set of AFV Club T142 Indy links.

They're a perfect fit, so Revel did a dang nice job with this kits measurements.

Sure it could use some better and finer details, but there is plenty of AM bits and bobs to dress the kit up. This kit almost rivals Tamiya for parts fit.

I've been finishing up the detail painting and I'm thinking I'm about done. I'm sure, as always, I'll find a few things I missed.

Thanks, Gam! It's about as authentic as I can make it. Looks similar to online references. Well, the clean ones anyways lol.
