Great pictures people! I never thought I'd get used to seeing the new G.I. helmets, but now the old steel pots are starting to look strange after all these years.

I know what you mean. I wore the steel pit and K-pot over the course of my career... now the ”new” MICH helmets look so modern compared to those... and the WWI Brody helmet that my uncle and those before him wore... like something from a museum

Yeah, that's what we looked like back then. Thanks for posted the photo.  Guess it gives away my age -- I was 19  at the time.

My father was ADA in Germany in 1955... I would stomp around the same area of Sagebrush as a grunt nearly 30 years later. Peason, Ft Polk, and surrounding areas are quite familar to me...

Sprue Brothers has the regular Jeep kit for a reasonable price.

As far as age, I hit 55 this year and have been a retired "old man LTC" for over 8 years.

For the life of me though, I can't remember the company that made the soft top. Maybe Trakz?

Since I don't know or remember the bumper numbers I'll use whatever decals that come with the kit.  I'll paint it with standard Army olive drab, probably semi gloss.

Hello John!

Could you tell me how your Jeep is going to be painted? I mean the colour (semigloss/matt), the national stars and what is going to be written on it (the registration and the bumper numbers)?

It's not so easy to come up with things like these when one tries to model a jeep from a long time ago. I also wanted to build an M-38A1 from Vietnam, but I have found that there weren't that many of them there, and many believed to be M-38A1's were in fact CJ-5s painted olive drab...

Good luck with your Jeep and have a nice day

Paweł

All comments and critique welcomed. Thanks for your honest opinions!

The kits were originally made by Skybow in both the regular and 106 mm version.

I think there was a soft top made by someone when this kit was released in the late 1990s.

You could make the bows from some of the kit sprues or evergreen styrene rod of the right size.  Then make the canvas from tissue soaked in diluted white glue and painted.

AFV Club also made the basic version besides the 106 RR armed Jeep. Not sure how you can deal with the top up. I wonder if you can adapt one from a Willy’s Jeep, such as the Italeri kit.

AFV 1/35 Scale M-38A1 Army Jeep
Posted by John54 on Sunday, July 28, 2019 5:37 PM

In October 1955 I drove an M-38A1 Army Jeep from Ft Benning, GA, to Louisiana when our helicopter company participated in Operation Sagebrush.  Now I'd like to build a model of that Jeep.  The AFV 1/35 scale kit looks good for the project, but I want to build it with the canvas top in the up position and without the recoiless rifle.

Does anyone know if this kit has a closed top option?  If not does anyone know where I can get one to wil work with this model?

Thanks for any suggestions,

John
