Tried hand painting a German hard edged pattern with Ammo of MiG Ral 8017 acrylic on a 1/48 Tamiya King Tiger turret based coated with Tamiya XF88 Dark Yellow. The Ammo of MiG paint brushed beautifully over the matt Tamiya surface with barely any discernible brush marks (about three coats, 90 min work time). Tomorrow I’ll be laying down the Ral 6003 pattern over the same turret.
Previously, I hand painted hard edged patterns over Vallejo or Ammo of MiG base coats. These coats are somewhat satin. The slicker satin surface made it harder to cover and I struggled with unsightly brush marks.
From now on, I’ll hand brush hard edged patterns over a matt surface. If using either a Vallejo or Ammo of MiG base coat, try first sealing the paint with matt varnish before hand painting the hard edged pattern.
I could never achieve the same sharp lines with masking and painting as I do hand painting the pattern.
