I'm no pro, but I can try and log my progress here. Still waiting on all the goodies to arrive for the base kit.
I long to live in a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned
Yeah, that is all very true. I am trying to depict as realisticlay as possible the Leo 2's which were in service in Afganistan.
At the end of the day, lighting, computer screen colour, printing colour, fading of the paint, etc will make it all very difficult to be exact. Ideally I want to ensure the colour isn't too dark or too yellow.
I wouldn't get too hung up on achieving the 'correct' colour unless you are modelling a specific vehicle for a competition and are using colour references. Colours fade with use and photos can't be relied on. As long as its a reasonable match to the colour you want it should be okay. 'Experts' may tell you differently, but there are too many variables with colour, eg. scale; lighting; the acuracy of printed references as a result of the printing process; same for colour photos; exposure to the elements vs factory fresh; field applied finishes/repairs, etc, etc.
As long as you're happy with it, thats all that matters
I think you are right. According to this site, "sand" is the color used by the Canadian military during Operation Apollo, and presumably thereafter. Here is a chart I made of all the different colors I found suggested for the Leo. I think Sand looks like the best match to the base color of the Saab Barracuda camo pictured on the right.
Based on memory, it looked like a sand color.
There are other "car cover" camouflage systems now that look shaggy(!). I asked myself if any aftermarket maker would tackle such a thing, as to me the model tank is basically gone and replaced with a plushie that shoots bullets!
“Ya ya ya, unicorn papoi!”
I've got the HobbyBoss kit and I'm going to get the barracuda resin kit among other bits. I am curious if anyone knows of a good color match for the barracuda camaoflauge used in Afghanistan?
Likely it's a variation of shades, but I want to get opinions on a good matching base color.
