M60A2 CBSS finished
Posted by HeavyArty on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 7:52 PM
I have completed my M60A2 CBSS. Thanks to all who helped me out with advice and referances along the way.

For a recap of the build, I used the Tamiya M60A2 turret, Revell (ex-Esci) M60A3 hull (since it is the best one on the market), and a resin CBSS Bulge from fellow modeler Robert Skipper. I added new spot light and mount from an M48A3, new barrel without bore evac and correct length (kit one is 3mm too short), added cast texture to the turret and commander's cupola, forge mark and casting numbers to turret side, clips for tow cable, cut mud relief holes in sprockets, made tow cables out of ones from another kit and ship's rigging rope, added wipers to the GPS and Commander's sight, etc., etc. I used the octagonal block length and link track from the A3 kit as well.

You can see and read more about the build in the Armorama Rivet Review Board forum.
http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=62035&page=1

I finished it in European Temperate MERDC scheme and custom made the markings for tank # 15, A Company, 1st Bn, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division, stationed in West Germany in the late 1970's. I used a little artisctic license and named it "Death Dealer" and added an Ace of Spades card with the Grim Reaper on it that I found on the internet to the turret sides. I made all the decals on my home computer/printer and printed them onto clear decal film by Papilio art supplies.

Without further ado:

That is too cool. Great job, HeavyArty. I posted before... Where it went, I don't know.

Thanks, glad you guys like it.

For the mini-history lesson:

The M60A2 was developed to counter the Soviet hordes in Europe. It was a US Army tank, and only used by the US. It had the same 152mm combination gun/missile launcher as the Sheridan recon-tank. It was built on the M60A1 chasis and was used from the early '70s till the mid-'80s. It was plagued with problems because it was so advanced and went down as a footnote in history. Pretty cool looking though.

More info on it at Patton-Mania: http://www.patton-mania.com/M60_Patton/m60_patton.html#M60A2

That's a good looking "Alpha Duece". Was 1/32 Armor a mixed outfit? I was in 1/64 and we had two companies of A1's and one company of A2's. I never did serve on them although I was on Sheridans. Good looking build and paint job.

Another quality Quintiliani job, Gino! The camo is indeed superb.

Looks like the drybrushing inadvertently highlighted the edges of the "DEATH DEALER" decal, but other than that, a flawless build!

Thanks all. Yup, I noticed the edge on the decal in the photo too, amazing what a close-up will bring out. You can't really see it with the naked eye.

For now, this one will be going on the shelf. I plan to add crew gear, spare track, spare road wheel, etc. to it at a later date. Don't know if it will go in a dio or not, maybe just on a base.

No idea if 1/32 AR was composite or not. I just picked them since I came across that unit having M60A2s in the late '70s in Germany. Probably were if their sister units were that way as well though.

Thanks again.

Nice work Gino, as usual. 1/32 was garrisoned at Friedburg (Elvis' old unit), and was our sister A2 unit (we were 3/33rd). One thing I would suggest my friend, I would definitely add the plasti-canvas mantlet cover and the same for the m85 on the cupola when you get a chance, just to add to the "realism". Good show...

Thanks for the compliments.

Crockett,
Decided to take your advice, and the advice of others, and added the mantlet cover for the main gun and the M85 Commander's MG. I made them out of facial tissue soaked in diluted white glue, then painted. What do you think?

Gino,
I was in 3/68 armor Manheim Gr In the mid 70's the unit next door was 5/68 wich
was an A2 unit. The most accurate thing about your A2 is the lack of mud and wear on the tracks/suspension! They hardly ever left the motorpool!!!!! I personally remember
any of us having the occtogon pads until we got our A3rise and not all had that track.
Good job, If your going to do a dio w/it, set on a conrete pad or in a maint shed!!!!
Good Hunting,
G.W.

A guy at our last club contest did camo like that on his Abrams. Really neat.

Nice model.

Thought though.. You -have- been to Littlefield's, haven't you?

His Starship is in the four-colour scheme and happens to also have cards on the turret side...

Aha, you may say, DeathStalker isn't the name of that tank though.. but just down the hall, also on a 152mm Gun/Launcher...

Coincidence? Hmm...

NTM

The difference between infantrymen and cavalrymen is that cavalrymen die faster for we ride into battle!

You got me, kind of. I haven't been there, but have seen the pics of his M60A2 and got the idea for the card from it. Came up with "Death Dealer" on my own though as I have never seen the M551 pics. Kind of a coincidence, I guess.

I'd never heard of Jaques Littlefield before Nicholas' mention. In case anyone else hasn't, here's a link http://www.jacqueslittlefield.com/ site where you can see information about his magnificent collection. I wish California was closer!
