Question about Dragon's sFH-18 howitzer kit

What type of a vehicle would tow this piece? An Opel Blitz or some kind of a prime mover?

According to Perth, initially it was towed by horses and later on 8-ton semi-tracks and the SWS halftracks. I'd think the Opel to be too lightweight and underpowered.

Tigerman's right, the Opel wasn't rated for towing the sFH18. It's a heavy field howitzer, far beyond the light towing capacity of the Opel.

LOL: everytime a large artillery piece gets released, this question pops up.  Funny thing is the answer is almost all the same!

AFV Club 8.8cm Pak 43/41, towed by SdKfz 7 and SWS

AFV Club 8.8cm Flak 18, towed by SdKfz 7

DML 8.8cm Flak 36, towed by SdKfz 7 and SWS

DML 8.8cm Flak 37, towed by SdKfz 7 and SWS

DML & Trumpeter 15cm sFH18, towed by SdKfz 7 and SWS

In case you're wondering, the Sdkfz 7 ALSO towed the 8.8cm Flak 41 (Cromwell Models), the 10cm Kanone 18 (Precision Models and to be kitted by Trumpeter)

And if you're wondering: NO, neither the FAMO, nor the SdKfz11, nor the Sdkfz 251,  nor the Krupp Protze, nor the RSO are appropriate. (and yes, I'm aware that some oddball battlefield situations occurred that drove some desparate gun crew to comandeer some other vehicle)

What about the 105mm leFH18?        Was it towed by the Sd.Kfz 251?

Yes it could be.  AFV Club sell a 251 and leFH18/40 combo if you're interested.

On the bench: 1/32 Spit IXc

All of those SdKfz's are making my head spin. Can't somebody post a link to a specific kit I could purchase?

MonsterZero: You want Tamiya kit 35148 but it's current OOP. Over on EBay they show up.  Here's what it looks like.

As for other info about German Prime movers, here's a post I put up a while back:

The SdKfz 10 (1 tonner) hauled around light stuff like the iG18 75mm, Pak 36s or light flak guns. In a pinch it could haul 5cm or even the heavier Pak 40 or nebelwerfers. (The Sdkfz 250 series shares this chassis)

Next came the SdKfz 11 (3 ton). The SdKfz 251 shares its chassis with the SdKfz 11. The Sdkfz 11 (and sometimes the 251) were the vehicles tasked to haul the Pak 40 75mm , Pak 39 5cm, leFH18 10.5cm and sIG 33, 37mm Flak guns and nebelwerfers.

Then the SdKfz 6 (5 ton) was developed intended to haul the leFH18 10.5cm.

The SdKfz 7 (8 tons) was developed to haul the 8.8cm Flak guns (models 18, 36, 37 & 41). Other weapons like the Pak 43, Pak 43/41, sFH18 15cm howitzer, 10cm Kanone 18 and other weapons in this weight class were hauled by the "Krauss Maffai" Sdkfz 7.

The SWS can be placed next. A relative late comer, its capacities were similar to the Sdkfz 7, along with its loads.

Next was the SdKfz 8 (12 tons). It could haul all the weapons listed for the SdKfz 7 as well as some heavier pieces.

Finally, the SdKfz 9, commonly referred to as the "FAMO" was rated to haul 18 tons plus. It was developed as a tank hauler with the duty as a heavy artillery prime mover a very very low priority. It was used a TINY bit to move 24cm morsers. (There weren't many of them BTW)
