LAPD Police Markings/Details Queries
Posted by allan on Sunday, November 22, 2015 8:00 PM

Need help.

I just got myself a Revell Caprice Police car kit. Been wanting to snag one for quite some time, really.  Id like to build that into an LAPD cruiser.

Im stuck with building a 1991-92 Caprice model (skirted rear fender, chrome rims). My queries are:

1. Is there a specific numbering convention for LAPD cruisers?  I note big numbers on the roof and the trunk, but not sure what they represent.  Id pretty much like to be accurate on this (images on the net with top views show 1994-96 model LAPD Caprices) so info would be much appreciated.

2. Anyone have good pics of a 1991-92 Police Caprice engine?

3. Anyone have good pics of a 1991-92 LAPD Caprice interior (even just the interior color).

Information would be very much appreciated. Havent really built a car kit since the mid-80s.

As I recall:

#1. The number on the roof is the "shop" number. That would be the specific number assigned to the car by Fleet Services. The number on the trunk lid was the station "division" number the car was assigned to.

#2. No pics but I drove those too. The engine is aluminum with gloss black rocker covers. The air filter and such is semi gloss plack, it was plastic. Most of the rest of the engine bay is black except the fire wall which is body color. For LAPD this means gloss black.

#3. I remember that those model year police cars had tan, dark blue and black as interior colors only. My car had dark blue but I believe LAPD had tan.

One other thing, the '91 had black "B" and "C" pillars. That's the post between the front and rear doors.

'92-'96 had black trim and body color posts.

A 1991 Chevy.

A 1992

See the difference in the pillars ?

Here's a good look at the interior, this was a detective squad. The patrol squad had fabric seats up front and vinyl everywhere else.

Thank you so much for your reply!  That is a lot of help. Hope I can pull this project off. I hope to start next month.

On the pillars, Ive read about the 91-92 having them in black, but from what little LAPD 91-92 Caprices Ive seen, they appear to be white:

I understand these Caprices were actually former MTA units transferred to the LAPD.

I drove those for LASD (Sherrifs) along with many other types over the past 27 years.

The numbers break up into two catagories- the roof top which is usually the last three digits of the vehicles fleet number, and a two digit number for the division/station assignment. I don't know their numbers as far divisions go though. My current patrol area butts up against their South East Division and Harbor Division patrol areas. I will keep an eye open for their station numbers for you if you'd like.

i don't think I ever took photos of any radio car's engine. But I am sure some can be found on the Internet. BTW, that was a terrible engine- a step back from the earlier Caprice engine. The revamped Caprice finally foot a good engine in the final model year before it was discontinued.

I can't vouch for LAPD, but I seem to recall our "Shamu" cars having a blue interior. Same as our old "box car" Caprices. I do know that their cars were keyed identically to ours as I did move a couple of theirs as a joke one evening many years back... Go goof off in your own patrol area guys ;)

Stik,

Would very much appreciate that, thanks!

OG also mentioned his old cruiser as having blue interior. Perhaps so did the LAPD's?  Was it some kind of bluish gray hue, like in OG's pic above?

For a while I considered converting the Revell kit into a 94-96 version which I like better (ordering a new light bar and rims and cutting out the rear fender), but I thought, 1. theres a diecast model of that and 2. the kit engine would be inappropriate.  So Im stuck with a 91-92.

Yeah the interior was a medium blue gray color. Something similar to Intermediate Blue off the WWII USN tri color scheme. I'll update you on the division numbers when I see one. I'm at work now and will likely cross paths with them later on. Is there any particular area or division of LAPD that you are looking for?

Not really.  Just not sure if all divisions used 91-92 Caprices.  Thanks again!

Brother Carlos is going for that exotic west coast style, "Sharif".

Cool

Just to add to the confusion:

I recall the blue/gray interior only being available in '93-'94 or so.

If the B and C pillars are body color, it's a '92.

Wheelcovers were expendable, especially on a city car.

I agree the Caprice got the best engine in '96. Those were runners.

I had a detective squad, an '89, box Caprice that was a magnificient car. I think it was probably ordered as a command car but somehow I got it. Burgandy with pale gray interior. I wish I would have bought that one at auction.
