You know I'm following!  I have 2 out of 3 of these (at least the Eckler wheels).  Looking forward to the reveal.

Thanks,

John

I owned a Plymouth Duster, think it had the 383. A tank, fun to go to the pizza parlor.

Those GL's I think the show used up about 90 of them.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks for droppin' in fellas.

In a world of 440's and Hemi's the 383 was still no joke as it still had plenty of power to put some contenders in place.

I have a friend here at work that's got a brother who's totally Mopar and had a 69 Charger R/T some years ago. The producers of The Dukes of Hazzard contacted him and offered to purchase his 69 in which he promptly responded.....not just no but HELL no!! R/T's are sacred!!! Cool

I'm on board with you Bro.

I'm going to enjoy this build my friend. Love that you choose to revisit models you had built when you were younger. It's a sweet subject and it's fun to watch you "Frankenstein" diffeerent kits to get the results you envision.

Superb effort on sanding the roof. That came out terrific.

Bring it on My Friend.

Cheers, Joe

Thanks for all the good comments guys.

Found the paint that I want to use. I've been eyeballing this color anyways because I've seen a few of the newer Chargers painted this color and I have developed a liking to it.

Here we are all cleaned up and primed. Still gotta do a teeny bit of sanding but it went on really smooth:

I parked next to one the other day. I like the color too. It's pretty much perfect on a Charger.

Thanks for the comments guys. Greg, that's exactly how I came across the color myself. Parked next to one at Lowe's and new instantly that was the color I wanted to use.

Managed to dispense and apply the paint this morning. This stuff went on really good. I'll start the wet sanding process in a few days to smooth everything out that much more before I start with the decaling and clear coats. We'll be using the "Wet Look" clear on this one so it'll really pop.

It already looks better than any auto body I've done so far, and you haven't wet-sanded or clear-coated yet. Stick out tongue

I wonder if I'd be the only one who would appreciate a blow by blow of your wet sanding process, including types and grits of paper used? I'd bet not.

Fun fact. The General Lee on TV was actually painted RED so that when filmed it would show up Orange. Apparently it has to do with the camera and how it picks up colors. I learned that on Grave Yard Cars when the restored one of the General Lees from the Movie.

I love what you've got going on here. It is coming along nicely.

I spent a lot of time wet sanding the imperfections out of the paint and then applying Bare Metal Foil around all the window trim and drip rails and today...the decals. Here's a couple of shots of how it sits now. Still got the flag decal coated with Microsol to help it all lay flat onto the roofline. Had a couple of areas on the edges where it didn't want to lay down flush. Now to let the cals dry and then off to the gloss coat....my favorite part.

Thanks you guys!!

Today was Gloss Coat day soooo......I broke out the Testors "Wet Look" Clear ….the ONLY way to go for supreme gloss finishes in my experience. I dispensed it into a paint jar, let 'er gas out for about 5 minutes while I was removing whatever dust particles I could find on the body and went to work.

Couldn't be happier with the results. Now...……..to let it cure out for a couple of days before a nice wet sanding and polishing.

If that right there doesn't make a fella want to go buy a car model and start it, I don't know what would.

Have you ever used Alclad II Clear Lacquers, Joe? I'm curious how you would compare the finish with the Testors Wet Look.

Stunning finish Joe. You are definitely on to a fantastic technique with that Wet Look clear coat. You certainly have had me sold on it since you first started using. Maybe there will come a day when I might actually try it on an auto model. I truly believe that that day may come. Hopefully. Maybe.Confused

I'm currently working on the chassis and suspension. Before I go too far with the painting I've gotta get the stance set up. One of the good things about going with the Revell kit for a Lee build is that it has ALOT more detail packed into the kit as well as (and this is a definite plus) posable front wheels. I've been spending the last three days cleaning up all the chassis and interior pieces of all flash and mold seam lines. It's not tooooo awful bad really but it's been some work.

Gonna mirror this for the undercarriage color coating...with orange of course....

'Preciate that Brandon.

I've been working on the chassis, rear suspension and exhaust system.

Applied a subtle wash to the undersides to bring out some of the details and add some depth. I also hit up the leaf springs and differential edges lightly with a silver lead pencil:

Thanks Joe!

In my opinion, there's three major things to get right with a General Lee build: 1.) The car body-It's gotta look the part and it's gotta be near perfect in regards to the look and finish...……….and 2.) The stance, which I mentioned the previous post and 3.) The wheels. If the wheels are a flub job then the whole thing looks off balance. I've got one of the rear wheels pretty much completed and I feel pretty fair about the outcome. The rear wheels will come from the Eckler Corvette and are a little wider/ deeper for a more aggressive looking Lee. I stuck the tire on a 14mm deep socket (next time I'll use a shallow socket for more control and less wobble) and spun it up on a drill with the tire on some sandpaper to achieve the worn tire tread look.

That's pretty much how Dodge painted the undercarraiges from the factory.

Yeah I keep all that drama crap out of the picture. I came here to build and have fun....not fight with my fellow modelers. I have been known to throw some water on the occasional bully that I see picking on others though. Wink

I remember holding tires in my hand while I sanded down the tread way back in my highschool days. Using a drill looks much easier and less painful on the fingers. It looks spot on.

Thanks Brandon. It is easier and gives it more of an evenly worn look.

Ok.....this may not seem like a whole lot of work but believe me....after FOUR friggin' paint strippings to get these wheels right I finally got it done. Additionally I sanded off all of the mold seams on the tires with 1000 grit sanding sticks and worked my way to the 12000 grit range and then chucked 'em up in the drill and spun 'em up with the sidewalls held against my blue jean pants to polish up the sidewalls. After that these two tires got a treatment to some BFGooodrich Radial T/A decals. This deep dish rear wheel/ tire combo really benefited from the white letters and it's gonna look great on the car:

Thanks Bakster!

Did a mock up to see how it's all gonna look and was pretty pleased with the results. I'll have to move the front tires just a smidgen more under the fenders but other than that it's sitting exactly how I want it. The decaled white lettering and staggering the tire sizes to wider tracks in the back as well as dropping the whole car a scale 2.5" all the way around were well worth the while and gave the car the more aggressive stance and look that I was seeking. I ended up using the deeper Eckler Corvette wheels all the way around.

John: I have no doubt that you'll pull off a great build.

This'll be my second go round with these door panels as I didn't prime them before painting the first time and the paint lifted when I tried to apply the BMF to the trim areas. Bummer! So I stripped them and began with priming this time but ended up using Molotow Chrome the second time instead of BMF.
Picked up this new acrylic primer from Badger called STYNYLREZ. It's an acrylic polyurethane primer and I was pretty impressed with the results.

Image

Just apply in thin coats and it goes on smooth as a baby's butt:

Image

Finished door panels. I used RLM 79 with some shadowing here and there and chromed the details and trim with Molotow Chrome:

Hey Joe, its fun to watch you work on this.

Regarding the STYNYLREZ, did you thin it all? I have watched some videos on the stuff and straight from the bottle it appears thick. Funny thing is I purchased a bottle a few months back and I have yet to try it. I hear a lot of good things about it.

Yes sir, Steve is correct. Many Steves on here. Stick out tongue

Buddy--just when I thought the carpet was outstanding--you go and do the dash. This is stellar work. This model is gonna be a beaut when done.

I just noticed that you put keys in the ignition! LOL. That is awesome! Wow! I expect this car will drive if given a chance.

Awesome interior. Can you tell me how you did the carpet? It looks smashing.

Surprised you just discovered Stynylrez, but glad you did. It's great stuff.

Thanks Nick, Steve and Greg. Yes

Greg: I used flocking from the Model Car Garage. It's called Bisque Tan. I just put some white glue down after painting the floor tan and sprinkled the flocking on and matted it down some with my finger. I found out about the Stynylrez when I bought my new compressor from Badger. The rep just threw a bottle in with the order. I'm glad he did because the stuff works like a charm with acrylic paint.

Wondeful, wonderful interior Joe. I always enjoy the attention to detail you give your interiors. They are always about as close to realistic as anyone could ever achieve. It is a remarkable trait you possess.

So glad Badger tossed in that bottle of Stynylrez.

No trouble at all Greg!

Well I've officially completed the interior tub today. All that's left is installing the door lock knobs into the holes that I drilled in the top of each door which will happen after I've got everything installed neatly and securely up into the body as to avoid damage to the knobs during the interior install.
Revell really did everything right on this kit. If you look up under the dash on the passengers side you'll see the HVAC case. AM items include the seat belts and buckles, PE foot pedals, PE steering wheel spokes, PE keys and key chains and of course the carpet/ flocking. All chrome was applied with a Molotow Chrome pen except for the chrome endcap on the rear of the console. I'm pretty pleased with this.

I was on the fence about the roll bar. I had it out all ready to paint it up and install it. I even cleaned it up of all the seam lines and all but.......................I've been wanting to build a Charger R/T for a looooooooong time now and wanted to build this as a Lee...ish build. Dropping the stance and making this car an R/T version was the first vision that I had, then the deeper wheels and wider tires came along as all too enticing. Next up will be a 440 engine. She'll be a Lee alright....but a slightly modified one.Wink

Looking great. Nothing wrong with not adding the roll bar if you are not building it as a replica from the show. I guy just donwn the road from me did a full scale general Lee and his has no roll bar but it's still a beauty.

Your interior is looking great but is that a standard shift shifter? I had thought The General was automatic (I always wanted it to be standard though).

First off.....I worked on the battery a couple of days back and decided not to go with real cables for this one. Gonna concentrate most of my efforts on the brake lines coming off of the master cylinder and more so on the engine which I still haven't decided which way to go with yet.

Image

Secondly.....If you wanna know about stress...…I can tell you about that. I have never seen an interior that fought the whole way going into a car body before. I just knew one of the windows were gonna pop out or that there was going to be an interior side panel pop out of place or something was gonna break while installing it. I can't really turn the car body upside down to do all of this either due to all the flocking going everywhere during the popping and all from fitting this interior up into the body. I had to do all of this with the body upright which made things really hard to do. But............…I got it. Thank God-I got it.

Okay......I managed to get the hair raising task of installing the wheels all done. Sounds simple but I made the wheel mounting holes on the rims an oval so I could get this one just wee tad lower. Had to get all the wheels at just the right height so I wouldn't wind up with a "3 wheeler". The stance is now locked in.

I also got the back panel all painted up, detailed up and bumpered up and installed. I hit the body with a little more polish but can tell I need to do it again just to get it just right.

Thanks you guys.

Today saw the completion of the engine bay prep. The one thing I couldn't get over was the clear windshield washer bottle out of the box. I%20dunno_zpsgjbxiscc A little weird but I guess they were trying to appeal to the average modeler.

I made the necessary corrections to it and managed to finish up the engine bay today. Shock studs and retaining nuts were added to the shock towers, brake lines were fabricated and added and I brought out the highlights of the steering column with a silver lead pencil. Anyhow ....here's the engine bay all prepped for that 440 engine to be installed hopefully shortly....

Thanks Joe and John.

After painting and weathering and masking and trying to air brush Molotow onto the rocker covers(and not succeeding at it this time around) I'm at the point where I think I can post something worth lookin' at. I must've stripped those rocker covers 3 times and tried the Molotow treatment on them. Just wasn't working out this time so I finally grabbed a set of chrome rocker covers from one of my spare Revell Hemi Dart kits that had a 440 in it and put them on. Still have some detail painting on those to do, exhaust manifolds install, carburetor & return spring & bracket and throttle linkage build and install, engine electrical harness and plug wires to put together and install but after a long couple of weeks I figured it was time to post something. I've still got a long way to go on this engine but here it is so far:

How did you get the wires into the dist? Every time I try I make a hot mess out of it.

Ok fellas. Now I can move ahead with the rest of the build now that I've got this part out of the way. I may come up with another air cleaner out of the stash as I'm just not feeling 100% satisfied with this one. But I'll call this completed.....for now.

Ok folks.....being pretty much unhappy with the air cleaner that I had on the engine I searched high and low and found one more air cleaner in my stash that actually goes on a 440 and shot it with Molotow Chrome through an airbrush. This time the results were pure magic...……

This looks MUCH better to me....

Brandon: Thanks anyway pal. lol

Joe: That Molotow Chrome is really some good stuff. No complaints with it yet.

I'm to the point that I'm now working on the grille/ front end of this bad boy. I can't really fit anything into the engine bay as far as the radiator core support (which has now been extensively modified to fit. Don't ask folks....I really don't know what happened with the fit of everything up front. All parts were test fitted prior to even painting and it all fit perfect. Now ...the front fenders have to be spread in the front some to get the brace and hood to fit. Weird.

As far as the grille goes, there's some more mods that I'm doing. Looks like the inserts from the MPC kit turned around backwards fit perfectly in the openings that I cut out of the grille. I've still got some filling and sanding to do to get rid of those nasty ejector pin marks but that's not really a worry of mine. I cut the PE grille inserts out and test fitted. Looks like it's all a "go" at this point. One more side to go...…..

Engine bay is......finished!!

Hey Joe, your model is off the scale good. The detail you put into this is astounding to me. Fantastic work on the grill and engine compartment.

Thanks Brandon and Steve!

Brandon: I used to rush through cars the last time I got back into modeling some 15 years ago for a year or somyself. Just didn't view them the same way I viewed say....an aircraft build. This time around I'm seeing that there's so much available for auto modeling now it's crazy and the resources are endless to turn out a really good build. It's really alot of fun to just dive into one of these cars and build it like you would as if it were in your very own driveway or garage.

I didn't like the kit supplied exhaust tips and decided to fabricate my own out of aluminum tubing. I angle cut a stalk, cleaned both sides up and polished them up. Then cut them to length and installed. Still gotta add the black soot to the insides of the pipes but I'm fairly happy with this result.

Magnifico!!! The Gen. Lee is looking all superb. Beautiful engine detailing and the tail pipes are boss. Looking forward to the all finished up pics.

Thanks you guys!!

When I started this build I had no intention of building the General Lee as everyone knows it. I am a Charger fan long before I am a "Dukes" fan but still like the look of the General Lee so I hope I don't hurt any GL purists out there looking on.sorry%20bout%20dat_zps1nny96hw.gif  I built one as a kid and have always wanted to have a second shot of it. Only this time I got to add my own touches to it. I started with the stance. I didn't like the high stance of the Lee at all so I set out lowering a bit all the way around. I also went with wider wheels from the AMT Eckler Corvette kit and used a set of tires(which I turned into Bf G's by way of decals ) from the Revell Challenger T/A kit so I could have a more aggressive look. Secondly, if I had one of these it only makes sense to have opening doors....hence the door handles. Third, I love the looks of the 69 Charger R/T grille.....a true testament to the aggressive looking front ends of the time so I opted to show the R/T grille unobstructed by not installing the grille guard up front. Just couldn't do it guys. Lastly, the GL is NOT an R/T which I simply could not have. If I'm going to build a Charger then it's gonna be an R/T and it's gonna have a 440 and not a 383. You're also not going to find a roll bar or CB radio inside. I love the looks of a factory interior in any car and have always liked the Charger interiors in particular so I couldn't "spoil" any of that.

The kit is from Revell. Paint is Testors "Go-Mango" lacquer with Testors "Wet Look" clear. Decals are from the MPC GL kit which was really the only visible part that I took from that kit except for the front and rear license plates which came from Thomas Logan at Speedway Decals. Exhaust tips are aluminum rod cut to length as well as bevel cut and polished, all scrips and details are from the Model Car Garage PE set for the Revell kit.

Anyways here she is. I'd like to thank everyone who followed along, peeked in, and for those who commented or had input along the way.

You really nailed it with the stance and the Wheels/ tires.

The color is a lot more “sophisticated” than the earlier color too and looks excellent.

Be proud to call it “yours”.

Thank you all very much. One of the replies that I received on another forum included a suggestion that has had me thinking ever since I read his post. The idea of a Bullitt....ish 68 Dodge Charger R/T. I do have a Revell 68 Charger R/T in the stash. Hmmm.....:hmm:......now THAT sounds like an excellent idea!!!!

Well done!  Your build is most inspiring, and will be used for reference when I build my SSGB Dodge Charger!  I know next to nothing about muscle cars, except which end is the front.  Your build has been very educational for me.

Thanks for the wonderful trip back to my childhood Joe. That’s the best GL model I’ve ever seen. “Well, we know them pesky Duke boys probably just removed the RT badges while running ‘shine (in my best Waylon Jennings narrator voice)....
