Thanks Joe, Greg and Brandon.

Once the cals get on there it'll change it all up a bit I think.

Greg....this one aint that bad really. I've done alot harder work on projects to get the proper stance/ look.

Some misc. ramblings;

To me the slicks look too big for the car.

Didn't AMT make a Maverick with a Boss 429?

Lewbud,
A lot of good tips. However, reading "but the IPMS car judges tend to look..." reminded me why I got away from entering model contests. Art is subjective and I came to realize that I didn't like what the judges thought. I built my models for my own enjoyment, not what someone else wants.

Thanks for your input Jim. Actually I had some smaller slicks on this car and they just didn't look close to the reference photo to me. The more I looked at the slicks I ultimately went with, the closer they looked to the pictures.

No worries.....at first I thought the same thing as you.

AMT did make a Maverick with a 429 but it was a funny car like this one:(Revell and Jo-Han also were mixed into this kit later on)

Boxart Multi-Maverick 21749P AMT

The Jo-Han Pro Stocker also comes with an option for the 429 as well.

As far as judging and the way I feel about it goes....I like taking my stuff to shows when I get the opportunity. I don't mind 'em looking or judging as long as they don't touch or pick up my build.

BigJim,

I understand, but if you're planning on entering a contest of any type, it helps to know what the judges are looking for.  I was just offering an insight.

Lew,
I understand what you are saying, and that is why I quit going to model contests. The judges and I just didn't see eye to eye. Some people like an engine bay full of chrome, me, I wouldn't pee on an engine bay that looked like that. Different strokes for different folks!

Mustang,
Well, compared to the photo, those slicks do look right, but, even on the real thing they look like they are too big.

I tried looking up Maverick models on the web last night and found one made by Jo-Han that was like the one I used to have, but, I know that when I bought mine, it wasn't made by Jo-Han. For the life of me I have no idea what happened to mine. But I do remember that the slicks fit in the wheel well and didn't have that "Dave Deal" look. Wink

I get what you're sayin' Jim. Yes I've got another Maverick in my stash that's going to get the period correct and slicks proportionate to the car. For some reason I just like the way this car looks. lol

Mustang,
Why did you not paint the roof white first, then mask for the red?
When I paint a model, after a base of primer grey, if white is part of the color scheme, it is the first color that goes on. That way I don't have to worry about covering any other color or for the color to bleed through.

I think I'll be alright. I'll be careful....I promise. lol.

I do hear what you're saying but that's what I get for not looking carefully at the reference photos before I painted it. Only later did I look and see that the roof was white. Now I'm stuck with a recovery effort but I'll get it handled.

Looks great, Joe. You can get that white stripe done easy peasy. I actually found this same car being built on another forum. He is no where near as far along as you and his is not getting the love your's is. I thought it was you at first.

The decals sure look terrific there buddy. Sounds like your all amped up for a second round on the other side.Indifferent It doesn't appear that you should have any difficulty with that white stripe on the roof. Funny how we can miss the obvious sometimes.Embarrassed Good stuff Brother!

Looking sharp.  You could use white decal for the stripe

Thanks,

Thanks you guys for the comments.

Brandon: I've seen a number of that guys builds and he doesn't really go over the top but he does turn out some decent work.

Man.....I really goofed not looking at my references well enough beforehand. I've been pondering over the course of the last few days how to best approach that white roof and I think I've got it figured out now. In any case I trudged ahead with some decals.

Here's where we're at now with the 3rd Mock Up;

Thanks Joe and Nick!

Ok gang....the first of the corrections has been accomplished. Where I cut the decals to fit what I thought was a little bit better and turned out being too much above the wheel openings has now been corrected. I've gotta touch up the interior headlining a little bit now but that's small stuff. The more I looked at this the more it bugged me.

Before...paying close attention to the white area above the wheel openings...

And after the corrections....Next up....the roof.

Ok fellas!! I managed to mask off and paint the roof white without destroying the rest of the paint/ decal work that I've done. It aint perfect in regards to "correctness" but I got it close enough for me to be able to live with. I've also applied the gloss coat over everything...

Really nice work on this so far. I actually remember those days of drag racing.

On another note, should I assume you are a Dyno Don fan? Did you see the Dyno Don Mustang II I took a photo of during my last model show? Here it is:

Continued luck on your as I'm sure it will be great once it is done...

Thank you Ben and Greg!

Ben: That Mustang looks friggin' bad ASS!!!! Over the years I have turned into a Don Nicholson fan. Didn't know much about him for a while but have become fond of his cars. I'd like to build his Fairmont on o deez days.

Greg: I dunno bout dat home stretch thing but I'd like to think that I've at least got the body well enough under way. lol

Nice job on the roof Mustang! Pretty close to the real thing, except maybe a bit too shiny (but that's never really a bad thing). Can't wait to see more!  As for building his Fairmont, I hope the Googlefu is with you because I can't remember anyone kitting a late 70's/early 80's Fairmont in plastic or resin.

Give me a break Mr. " I'm able to live with it". That is very beautifully done and turned out as sharp as can be. At least from my point of view. And you know my opinion is beyond reproach.Wink

I was going to show you the Fairmont Pro Stock kit, but I see you already found it, and they have decals out for Dyno Don and Bob Glidden too I believe.

Great builds, I'll be watching them all.

Joe: LOL!! Thank you for droppin' in. There's a blem there alright. To the casual observer it can't be seen but if anybody is a true Don Nicholson fan and a fan of this car...it's there. lol

Ben: I'm wasn't necessarily a Fairmont fan until late when I saw Don's car. Thanks for your comments as well.

Thanks for the link Mustang! Wasn't a Dyno Don fan, but I became a big Bob Glidden after I got my first set of wheels back in the 80's (he was pretty much winning everything and he drove a Ford). I always wanted to get his autograph, but the one time I saw him out at the Motorplex, I didn't have my book with me. He was crew chief for I think the Jegs Pro Stock Cobalt at the time. He was busy working and I didn't want to disturb him. I looked for him the next time I went to the Nationals there, but he had retired by then. Was very saddened to learn of his passing in 2017. With the resin Fairmont, the only cars not available in kit or resin form are Glidden's 79 Plymouth Arrow, and his Ford Probe (although something is tickling the brainstem saying that Revell did a Glidden Probe pro stocker).
