My Dad's Marlin Model 80 he got for Christmas of 1953. microgroove barrel still delivers fine accuracy.

The Edsel also suffered from indifferent builders; they were built on Ford and Mercury assembly lines instead of dedicated Edsel factories, and many of the guys building them didn't really care.  Their engineering was iffy at best, and the styling - especially the horse-collar grille - was an acquired taste.  I think the paint job on that model is probably better than the real car got.  

While Gaston definitely died in a race car accident, I believe both Arthur and Louis lived fairly long lives and died of normal causes.

Both Louis And Gaston his brother were killed in racing accidents.

Wow I had no idea Chevrolet was a driver.  Thanks Bill, great bit of trivia.  Dodge was named after the Dodge brothers.

I would hazard a guess that it was the name at first.

Edsel was the name of a fictional car company marketed as though Ford had bought it, as they did with Mercury. On the other hand, Lincoln was an actual car company.

So when lined up against other marques (not models);

Ford- a legend of American capitalism.

Lincoln- named after a President.

Mercury- a God.

Then there's;

Chevrolet- a racing car driver.

Buick- like Lincoln an actual independent company that GM acquired.

Chrysler- another famous industrialist.

Pontiac- an Indian chief and a city.

Dodge- an actual car company.

Plymouth- the badge even had a ship.

And on the AMC side;

Hudson- an actual car company.

Then there's- Edsel. Named after the son of a wealthy guy who ran his father's company when Henry was forced to leave; successfully but not visibly.

IIRC, a lot of the complaints were about the Edsels having "too many new fangled gadgets". I was looking at them when they came out and I liked them. I was told that the "Ranger" was the best model  to get. They seemed to last the longest. I still think they are nice looking cars.

Beautiful build!  That color looks amazing on that car.  What paint did you use?  I'll never understand why the Edsel got such a bad rep.  Sure, it wasn't the most stylish car but there were a few others that looked worse.  BTW, that's an amazing USS Arizona in the background.  Is that the old Revell kit?

 

Then the car didn't have the wow factor to make up for the poor name choice.

Even in recent years, Ford came out with the *yawn* Ford Five Hundred. No one bought them.

Then they retired their original Taurus, stuck the name on the Five Hundred and everyone was. "Wow, I can't wait to get the new Taurus! I hope they do an SHO too!"

I'm like, "Dude, no one looked at the car when it was the Five Hundred."
