Revell Porsche 956C

I started to do just that, trying to collect everything I would need to continue my 60 year hobby into retirement. But that was 10 years ago now and looking at the price of living especially with gas (heating) and Electricity costs rising here by 100 to 150%. We should have spent more as a nation on Nuclear power, not shying away from it, to be more self sufficient but now paying big time for our constant hesitation! We as pensioners here in the UK, I have a Mantra into and throughout our upcoming winter, it is, Heat,Eat or Die!

Tom, I started doing the same thing with my paint supplies. I started going to Joanne Fabrics whenever my wife went for supplies for her window treatment business. They have a great craft section with tons of bottles of paint with different brands.  

At an average of $3 for 0.57oz. of well known brands verses $1 for 2.0oz of craft paints, it's a great buy. I went in one time and they were on sale 3 for $1. Walked out with 30 bottles for $10. Spent about 1/2 hour going through row after row checking all the colors. 

I used to use a well known brand but started to work with the craft brands also. I thin them both with distilled water (98cents a gallon) and clean the airbrush and regular brushes with Windex. No problems with either. I've used both on the same model and won medals at shows.

You know the old saying "You do what you have to" but I don't think I'll buy any more of the name brand once my supply runs out as they both do the job for me.

PatW, as a recent retiree I feel your pain.  Budgets are getting tighter and priorities have to be made and unfortunately modeling has to take a back seat.  I'm so glad that I was able to set up a stash large enough to "sustain" my modeling but I never considered the cost of the "Extras" like paint and glue rising as drastically as they have.  For myself, I have switched over to using craft acrylics as much as possible as my supply of "Real" modeling paints dwindle down.  When they're on sale, I can get a bottle of craft paint for less than a dollar a bottle compared to four to six dollars a bottle(smaller bottle too) for the model paint.  I'm primarily building for myself and not contests so I'm happy with the results.  We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Pat that is a great build you did. I always loved those cars.I pray for you and your countrymen that the crissis you have will be resolved soon.Please dont stop building you do such a fantastic job on you projects.

Europe is gonna have a rough winter for sure. Energy is our new crisis world wide. I can completely understand your logic for cutting back. You really have little choice. Peace and happiness are most important, building models can add to that but not at the expense of no heat. Praying for you guys to pull through this favorably.

Well the kit has a base chassis, a body top, a small cabin that fits to the inside of the body, four pins on the chassis for the wheels, a few clear pieces for the windows, headlight covers and rear lights and a five piece rear wing. The decals took a lot of soaking as the backing was thick paper, and they had a vynil quality, quite thick, not good on any corners.

Well as a pensioner car kits here are between £30 to £60 a bit hard on the budget. Plus this year home wise we have an over  100% rise in electric and gas! We refused to build more Nuclear Power Stations to be self suffient in energy but due to the war in the Ukraine, Russia is now charging well over 150% extra for a gas supply to Europe. Germany was recently cut off as they refused to pay the extra cost!We have sea based wind farms but nobody thought about 'no wind no electricty'! We now have a threat that the lights will go out over winter. Those who rushed to buy electric cars due to another hike in petrol and diesel prices, may not be able to charge their cars and sit indoors in the dark also unable to cook food!

Our out going Prime Minister is extolling the virtues of new Nuclear Power stations, all but too late as they take over 5 years to build and we need the power now!

So Pat how was the build for a Revell kit? And I also think that is a neat change to finishing a kit.

Thanks John, yes paint is becoming too expensive, buy a spray can and the shipping cost doubles the price. As with kits through the post as well, with a high price for postage and packing.

I'll just go through the kits I have on the shelf, about 20 and when they are gone I'll be done with models.

I was expecting the little speedster lol.  So no paint on this one?  Looks cool - love that car
