Tamiya clear on testor base
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 9, 2003 3:48 PM
Greetings-

Is it me or does Tamiya's gloss clear not come out as glossy on non-Tamiya paints as it does on Tamiya paints?
Did that even make sense?
I tried this on a Knight Rider kit and wound up sending it to the engine degreaser tank, and using Testors gloss instead.
Yes, I did let the base coat "Gas Out."
Is it something to do with their formulas, i.e.: Tamiya lacquer "hotter' that the Testors?

Just curious,

Carlos

TS Clear is extremely hot. I've found it works best if you let the Testors enamel dry for a week or more (yes 7-days) and put it on in multiple, thin coats.

Carlos,
Use Future Floor Wax as a clear topcoat - it dries much thinner than Tamiya Clear and won't eat into other paints. As the above reply states, acrylic laquer is extremely "hot" and can (but not always) eat paint, kill decals and make your life a misery - not to mention bloody toxic.
Future is actually a really good alternative - just sparay it on full strength, use 3 or 4 very light dust coats, then nail it with a quick wet coat, then leave it for a couple of hours. If it needs a little mode gloss, then give it another wet coat.
You'll like it much better than the hot laquers.

LeeTree

I like Future too... Lacquer gets a good finish, bu tI think Future is as good, and a lot easier to deal with!
