COMPLETE SCRATCHBUILT 1:30 SCALE WESTLAND LYSANDER
Posted by Foz on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 2:48 AM

Hi everyone

Foz here.a bit of a newbie here.

I live in the backwater part of S.E Bulgaria where I only know of one model shop in the entire country and that is in the Capitol ,Sofia, which is about a 4 hour drive from where I live. This then forced me to Scratch build all my models if I wanted to carry on with this hobby.I brought a handfull of kits with me from my home country(UK) and occasionally on trips back home I bring small kits out here.

I have now found that I get much more satisfaction out of scratch building than I ever did with kit building.

I want to show you my Westland Lysander that I scratch built late last year. The materials I used to build this are as follows

1. Balsa Wood

2.Old Birthday /xmas cards

3.Scraps of plastic sheets

4.Tissue Paper

5.Pieces of different size wire I ripped out the back of an old TV

6.Bits of old packaging

In fact I raided the wifes kitchen bin to see if there was any thing usefull to use in there!!Wink

I know it sounds crazy but if you live in a place like this...then improvisation is the key word.

This project took me about 5 months to complete.....a few tears on the way but I think I got there in the end and I am very happy with the end result

For those of you who are intersted you can see how I put this Lysander together in "How I Scratch Build" on my Web site below.

I would appreciate any comments .....good or bad

I'll post some Pictures after I have made a cup of tea........yes....you can get tea hereBig Smile

heh Author, er Fonzarelli... I mean the Foz!

Idea 'Like a diamond bullet shot through my forehead I thought... the genius... the genius'

^^ I like movie quotes.

Anyhow here is a idea for your excellent scratch built models. Museums prefer original models, that is scratch built larger scales. Most are 1/15 scale yet your work in 1/30 scale would impress museum goers and staff alike. This way more people can appreciate your dedication to scale modeling & excellent work.

2 cents Just a thought, I am sure you have considered this idea.

Hi Jason

Thanks for your input....yes I have already thought of museums but its a case of transfering them back to the UK because the Museums don't seem to be interested here in Bulgaria....I did once donate a Spitfire model to the Palm Springs Museum....but it wasn't much..!

Cheers

Truely amazing.  Now I'll never, never post pictures of my disfunctional efforts. Crying

I don’t know how I missed this back in ‘11. But again, WOW! This is most impressive work that you’ve done scratching up this Lizzie.

Well;

So you don't have a Local Hobby Shop nearby . Seems like you have the passion though ! That is one beautiful model of one of my favorite planes .

When I was a tad ( Little Boy )  I didn't have an L.H.S. Either . I built out of wood , Paper , Tin Foil and toothpicks etc . If you have the passion , nothing stops the true model builder . Your plane is a Superb example of Passion !
