I use Airline Hobby Supplies.

They carry the Xtracolor airline range.

Cheers,

Aaron

Aaron I have seen there site before but they require you to purchase a kit. I have way too many kits now and there prices are not the cheapest in town. And I only need  a few bottles so the cost would be hard to explain to the better half.

Well, you could mix your own or eyeball it.

Hi again urich,

In October 2007 (when I jumped into Airliner modeling seriously), I purchased a bottle of "Future Floor Wax", a pack of #0000 steel wool, and small (1 lb) tins of Minwax Enamel Paint in Black, White, Red, Blue, Green, Brown, & Yellow, as well as a larger can of enamel thinner. (when you get supplies like these, it appears to be household up-keep & touch-up supplies which generally makes the better half feel proud that you're preparing for odd jobs around the houseWhistling [:-^]

With these colors however, I can mix virtually any desired color and have used them on the 8 airliner builds since '07, still with a little over 1/4th a can remaining in each.    I use an airbrush for broad surfaces and standard multiple sized paint brushes for the detailing.

(1) Buff with steel wool,

(2) mask & apply the paint (dry under box 24 hours),

(3) apply coat of Future (dry under box 10 hours),

(4) decal & weather, apply 2nd coat of Future (dry under box for 10 hours),

(5) gently buff with steel wool then buff with soft cloth.

It's old school, but it renders a beautiful, low-cost, and durable finish.

Later...

Not trying to Hijack but I remember reading many years ago something about adding a drop of bright blue to a new jar of white enamel to make it more brilliant.

Does that sound right to you guys ?

Adding a drop of blue owrks well. I prefer to use Humbrol 130 semigloss white, which gives a very pure, white colour (OK, I know white's not a colour, but you know what I mean. A couple of coats of Future glosses it up nicely, and Future doesn't yellow with age.

For othe airliner colours, if I can't find a suitable match in a generic range (which I often can), I use Xtracolor - but then I live in the UK, so shipping  and minimum orders isn't so much of an issue. If you do have to buy a kit 'to protect the paints while shipping' (and no, I've never got that one, either), rember that there are plenty of cheap kits out there (Hobbyboss, Revell, Airfix single-seater WW2 fighters, for example)vwhich are worth building.

Cheers,

Chris.

I need to stop by FSM more often! I didn't know they had added an airliner forum.

You didn't mention what colors you needed. For the basics, such as white, Boeing Grey, and Aluminum, there are a lot of options. I prime my airliners with Tamiya's white primer in the rattle can. It covers well, so you can paint over it or just use it as part of your livery, like Piedmont's white upper fuselage. I use Alclad White Aluminum for the bare metal parts of my airliners. The Tamiya primer works great with Alclad. Model Master's Canadian Voodoo Grey is a good substitute for Boeing Grey. I'll put it on after the Alclad. All of these are available from most online hobby shops.

For colors specifically mixed for certail liveries, I'll second AHS, since they carry Xtracolor paint. And you can never have too many kits, can you? Big Smile [:D]  I've also had good luck mixing my own colors with Tamiya's acrylics. They're not too hard to find, and if I screw up, I can usually remove the offending paint with Windex, leaving the white base coat and Alclad untouched.

HTH.

Ben, do you have a ratio for Boeing or airbus grey with Tamiya paint?

Sorry, I don't. I try to avoid mixing paint at all costs! Big Smile [:D]

I have just started to mix paints.  I have a friend in our club who builds nothing else but German, Japanese ww2 fighters.  Every time he builds one he has to buy paints for that  model.  I stop over at his house and we work together on models.  He has three card board box covers full of different colored paints.  Look at the money he must have invested in paint.  I'll try my method of mixing!   Or I'll paint the model with colors I have on hand.  Dutch
