727 worth a hoot?
Posted by modelcrazy on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 11:51 PM
I would love to find a 727 kit that's worth something. Every kit review I've read for Hasegawa, Heller, or Airfix is not very flattering.

Has anybody build one of these kits, and can tell me anything different?

Here's a Hasegawa 727 I did a year or two ago.  I thought it was a descent kit.

I'll get the Hasegawa kit. Its a little on the small size but it will do.

I really wish someone would make this beautiful bird with an extended flap and slot option. I remember flying on them as a kid and setting at the wing window just to watch those gorgeous flaps extend. Man I love that plane.

Yeah going up and down the back stair was cool too.

Noisy and smoky!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I think Zvezda's new A320 has optional flaps.  Hopefully, this will start a new trend with all the new airliner kits.

That would be nice.  Something other than parked or flying configuration.

When I was going through Aircraft Mechanics school back in 1980 in Waco TX, I watch the A&M 727 take off from our runway.  That thing stood on it's tail. It was amazing to watch,  and loud.

Welsh models makes a 1/72 vac formed/resin -100 kit.

www.welshmodels.co.uk/CLS72-18.html

It's not cheap, but it's big!

I was an engineer on '27s for a short while. It was a nice machine, but messy.

They were always leaking something!

A very nice aircraft!

There is always the paper route. There are any number of liveries and can be built into very nice models with practice and patience.

Yikes!

$180 (approx.). That's a little rich for my blood. Try to explain that one to my wife. And I bet you can't even display it with the flaps down.

Thanks Mach, it does look like a nice kit, but I'll stick to the 1/200 Hasegawa. I just bought one for $10.

$180 - $10 = Hey, I just saved $170. Now what can I buy?

"$180 - $10 = Hey, I just saved $170. Now what can I buy?"

Some sheet styrene and lots of xacto blades so you can scratch

build the flaps! And still have enough money left over to take your

wife out to dinner.

I realized it was VERY pricy, but figured I'd throw it out there. It's really

a lot worse than $180, I'm guessing you need to add at least another $30

for shipping.

Mach,

Thank you for the link, I do appreciate it. I'm not quite at the vacu form ability yet. Once I am (and win the lottery) I'll give it a try.

...and the Welsh kit has a solid resin wing which makes dropping the flaps a chore.

Good move on the Hasegawa kit, it is about the best in shape out there.

I have the old KMC 1/72 kit and it will need a lot of TLC to get looking right.

Thanks Aussie,

I'm going to start the Hase kit soon. It does look like a nice kit. I also bought some Braniff decals for it which may be a trial. The metallic blue scheme seems challenging.
