Authentic Airliners MD-11
Posted by Challenger350Pilot on Monday, March 25, 2019 2:50 PM

I have finished an Authentic Airliners MD-11 I'd like to share...would some one please remind me as to how pictures are posted within? I used Post Image on the last one, and I cannot remember for the life of me how to transfer them from there to here....

Thanks......

It worked!thanks so much!!! So here goes....

This is an Authentic Airliners 1/144 scale MD-11 build. Anyone who has enjoyed building an AA model can testify that this is not an average model, nor do they take a routine process to finish. The solid resin casts present unique issues that are challenging in their own right, but with patience and persistence return great reward. This is my first AA build. I’ve wanted to build an MD-11, in particular the AA kit, and thoroughly enjoyed learning a “new” process that took me outside of the usual “box” of model airliner building. I decided before beginning that I would finish her in the early Delta Air Lines “widget” livery, choosing in particular N801DE. This MD-11 began her life with Delta in 1992, outfitted with a cheat line stripe on her #2 tail mounted engine, which stood out as “different” than her sisters in the fleet. I am not aware of any subsequent MD-11s at Delta that carried that cheat line. She led a distinguished life at Delta, flying from Atlanta to Osaka, Brussels, London, Frankfurt, among many others, as well as some domestic routes. At some point, she was painted in the newer Delta “stripe” scheme before she was retired and stored for a while at Montreal. She began flying again for World Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, then again for World, and finally ending up at UPS, where she was outfitted in 2008 as an MD-11F. She STILL flies today as a freighter! In fact, as I write this biography, she actually (in real time) flew this morning as N294UP (under UPS livery) from Louisville, Kentucky (SDF) to Ontario, California (ONT).

Paint used was Tamiya grey surface primer, Tamiya TS-26 white, Alclad black surface prep, Alclad Chrome for the underside, duraluminum for the engine inlets, and airframe aluminum for leading edges on the wings and horizontal stabilizers and the hot sections. Testors flat black for the tires and nose; and a special enamel blend for the grey fuselage fairings, wings, and horizontal stabilizers. A mixture of Testors gray, metallic gray, and anodonic gray was used for the coroguard. Livery is from 26 Decals, 3D cockpit windows and passenger windows, some of the details, and static dischargers are from Authentic Airliners Decals. I did use some of the Nazca DC-10 detail decals as well. NAV lights and position lights are .06mm model railroad lenses. Thanks for looking!

Looks like the actual aircraft. You captured the metallic finishes looking as actual metal.

Just simply magnificent workBeer

Thanks! Its a screen shot using Google Earth from Atlanta runway 9R, enlarged and mounted on foam board. I still can't believe its almost correct scale...just dumb luck I suppose.

Super realistic! One of the best airliners I’ve seen. I think you fibbed when you said it was your first try at resin Bow Down

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Oh no...I was quite truthful. No fibbing here. I'm definitely going to build more resin....waiting for the 777-200, DC-8-50, and B720 to come available.

There was a dio a while back with the aircraft about to touch down on the runway. The modeler somehow blurred the number to look like the a/c was at speed. You should try that.

Awesome work! I just completed and posted a Delta L1011 from the same era. go figure.... it must be a yearning for the old logo to come back! The old Delta paint and widget IS a great look.

Agreed! I loved that old livery! And the L-1011 was a gorgeous hunk of machinery in those digs.

Beautiful build!  I love the blinds in the windows :-)   I'm not familiar with the model company but now I'm curious.  Thanks for sharing!

The windows are from Authentic Airliners Decals, and are a joy to work with. They are agile, not too thin, and are opaque, so as not to require white behind them. The model itself is from Authentic Airliners, which is a kit, but certainly NOT like the kits we are all used to. Solid resin, with resin parts, and metal main gear. The fuselage and wings are in one piece, with the other parts requiring some assembly. Putting it together requires epoxy and careful handling. It is a challenge in its own right, a "boutique" type of model, but a very rewarding finish. Take a look at the link below for decals and models at AA:

The L-1011 is (was) indeed a very beatiful airliner...and so is the MD-11! I chose this MD-11 because she had a special livery at Delta Air Lines...the stripe on the #2 engine was unique to this airplane, and to my knowledge did not appear on any other MD-11 in the fleet.

Thank you! The MD-11 is a beautiful bird in her own right...I just think that the Delta livery makes her stand out among the rest.
