I used an old t-shirt and some epoxy to strenthen the fuselage. I'm writing a "How TO" article for my IPMS chapter on my technique.

I know that the panel lines if scaled to 1:1 would be huge, but since I'm going for a polished aluminum fuselage (per Cathay Cargo) and am planning on using Bare Metal foil. Read in a Fine Scale article years back that the panel lines acutaly help applying BMF, so I knew it would be impossible to "sheet"  without these panels. Usually when I do airliners (99.9% of the time, and if they are great) I'll fill the panel lines. But in this case, I was kinda forced to this with what, and how I wanted to do create the aluminum effect.

It certainly is Milair, and contrary to what some may think, it isn't a solid red in alot of places but rather a heavy overspray or red over a yellowy base coat. Will try and get some pics of that too.

I have to chime in here and say that the panel lines should be filled not engraved. The only panel lines that should be visible are around hatches and doors. Even these are pretty close tolerance. There is a lap joint along the upper sides of the fuse where the top half of the fuse and hump gets attached that is pretty prominent. The panel lines are filled with sealant and really can't be seen. If I can remember I will take some pics for you tomorrow at work. We have VH-OEJ in the hangar at the moment, the big red one. The radome has a slight line around it, as it has to sit pretty flush to the forward bulkhead. Any pics of an area you need, I'll see if I can help.

I built this model once, and I'd like to tell all people who are going to build it, to reinforce the wings/fuselage joint by installing some kind of bulkhead or win spar, or otherwise the wing's weight and stress will cause the fuselage joint in that area to start cracking. In other words it pays off to stiffen the wings and fuselage a little in this model. Hope this helps, have a  nice day

I got that kit unstarted.  If I remember tomorrow I can post some pics of the nose area.  Still waiting on my British Airways "OneWorld" decals from F-DCAL to arrive in the mail before I can even think about working on her.  Am thinking about dropping the flaps.

Never realized the correlation, but yeah, it's Jonas and I do want to be a "whale" pilot.

I'm hoping somebody had the kit (not started) that could take the photos. The websites have just overall shots, found nothing specific to what I need.

So you want to ride a whale & your name is Jonas?

Anyway, I can't help directly with the pics - but a few places you could try for photo reference are;

www.primeportal.net

www.airliners.net

www.google.com/imghp (try 747+walkaround+nose or something like that)

Revel 747 help
Posted by 7474 on Saturday, August 21, 2010 11:54 AM

I'm getting the bodywork done on my 747-400 (Revell 1/144) and I decided to rescribe the panel lines. I'm doing this because it will be half Cathay Pacific BCF in the polished aluminum, and have Kalitta Air (which will be white). I'm wanting to fly for Cathay on the Whale, and my dad is whale driver for Kalitta, so I'm wanting to do a tribute to our progress and aspirations.

Anyways, since I've attached the clear cockpit (made by Oldhooker). Because I sanded all the lines off, I'd appreciate if someone could take pictures of the nose area that show the panel lines. I'm looking for a top down view, from the top passenger door forward, as well as a left and right sides, around the cockpit, down to the radome in front. Thanks again, and I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to get it done soon for my dad's Birthday in a few weeks.
