Lindburg reissue old Pyro Vintage 1911 aircraft models
Posted by Radarider on Thursday, May 15, 2014 9:51 PM

Was delighted to learn that Lindburg models have reissued the old 1960’s line of pre-WWI aircraft circa 1911; Bristol Boxkite biplane, Avro bi and triplane, Martin-Handasyde monoplane, Deperdussin monoplane to name just a few.

Fondly remember building these as a young modeler in junior high school back in the late 60’s.  Really learned a lot about assembling multi winged aircraft, rigging and fabricating my own super detail parts from scrap.

Wow, I wish I had read this thread before posting in General Discussion.  I have wanted for some time for someone to re-release those!  They are getting a little scarce!  I still have one kit on shelf, but would like to do some of the others. I think I have the Avro Tripe.

I found them at the link posted below.  I’ll bet a dozen doughnuts that you can find them on Amazon.com also.

These kits originally were issued by a small, short-lived British manufacturer called Inpact.  (That's Inpact, not Impact.)  They were later reboxed by Pyro, then Life-Like, then Lindberg.  In their first incarnation, this line was packaged in boxes with the logo from the British movie "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, or How I flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes" which was released in 1965.  If you haven't seen it, you're in for a treat.  (Here's an interesting website about it:  en.wikipedia.org/.../Those_Magnificent_Men_in_their_Flying_Machines .)

Lindberg itself seems to be out of business now.  Most recently, though, at least four of the kits have been picked up by a relatively new firm called Round 2 Models ( www.round2models.com ).  Round 2 is reissuing all sorts of kits from Lindberg, Hawk, and a few other old companies.  Its versions of some of the old Pyro ships are creating quite a stir over on the "Ships" forum.

Inpact also did a small series of British fighters from the twenties and thirties:  a Gloster Gladiator, a Hawker Fury, a Bristol Bulldog, and (my favorite) a Fairey Flycatcher.  All four of them are also on Round 2's list.

At the time of their release all the Inpact kits were state-of-the-art.  The magazine reviewers commented on the realism of the "fabric" effect, the amount of detail, and the multi-pose pilots.  As I remember, the "Flying Machine" kits had clear plastic wheels, with grooves representing the spokes. Run a little thinned paint into the grooves, and presto - a pretty realistic wire wheel, years before photo-etching. And each kit came with a little spool of "invisible thread" for the rigging.  They command not-unreasonably high prices on the used kit market.  (See, for instance: http://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php?detail=24145&manu=Inpact&erl=Inpact-1-48-Hawker-Fury-P202 .)  But apparently the original issues are quite scarce, at least in the U.S.

The re-release of these kits is, to my mind at least, a pretty big event.  (Newly-printed decals in the fighter kits will alone make the reissues preferable to the originals.  The "Magnificent Men" kits, as I remember, didn't have decals - but I may be wrong about that.) I've got my eye on that Flycatcher, in particular.  I suspect when I actually see it in the box my memory of it will turn out to be rose-colored, but the basis for good, serious models is certainly there.  And for early aviation enthusiasts, there's nothing else on the plastic kit market to compete with those "Magnificent Men" kits.  Bravo Round 2.

Prof Tilley you are right about the Flycatcher. I still have the one I built in the late70's or early 80's which has survived 3 moves to different houses, kids, cats, etc. and I also have the box. I'll try to remember to post pics tonight when I get home.  Also got a Bulldog but I think it's in the Lindberg box.

It looks like a fine model - apart from the fact that it's upside down (and my phone refuses to let it turn over).

---apart from the fact that it's upside down---

1. Set the phone down and walk around it till it's upright.

2. Stand on your head.

3. Don't think the plane is carbeurated for inverted flight in which case it will crash

probably taking your phone with it.

Otherwise thanks for the compliment!! That was back in the day when I could actually start and finish a model : /

Good ideas. I'll give them a try.

There was an interesting "Database" article about the Flycatcher a couple of months ago (January 2014, pp. 69-84) in the British magazine Aeroplane Monthly. (I'm a big fan of that magazine; Barnes and Noble carries it.) The Flycatcher actually was an important aircraft: the very first airplane designed specifically to operate from ships. Great - and colorful - subject for a model. I wonder if any aftermarket decals for it are available. I doubt it.

Later edit - Hey!  The Flycatcher got turned right side up!  Looks even better that way.  I particularly like the machine guns clamped to the fuselage outside the cockpit, where the pilot can get at them to clear jams and reload.

I think the Smer Bulldog is a reboxing of an old Merit (British) kit.  Much older than the Inpact ones.

Still later edit: Wow! The Flycatcher has flipped onto its back again! Aerobatic little bugger.

I just scored the Martin Handyside, Avro bipe and Deperdussin Lindberg kits at HobbyTown this weekend!  Unfortunately today I discover that Tower Hobbies is offering them for $5 a peice less, but what the hay!  The Bleriot is in my sights next and I hope they'll issue the Avro tripe and Bristol boxkite soon.

Has anyone seen any of the Round 2 versions on any hobby shop shelves? I have built several Round 2 cars, and they were okay kits, so really waiting anxiously for the early aircraft!

Don

These are Lindberg labeled but have a Round2 label on the back. I think Round 2 bought out Lindberg, AMT and some of the old brands and is bringing them back.  I saw the Bobtail cruiser and several other Lindbergs on the Tower Hobbies website.  These I bought at HobbyTown. They cost 16 bucks each but I think they are cheaper online unless shipping drives the cost up. Pics coming.

Tower Hobbies here I come!!  Stick out tongue

[Admiring Starbuck's space fighter] Cassiopeia: It's a perfect machine! Born to dance amongst the stars! Starbuck: Yeah, it's bumping into them that has me worried.

I have a couple of the old releases sitting in my stash.  This thread has got me thinking of moving them to my bench now!

The kits I bought came with puzzles enclosed of the box art. My grandson was digging those. Check out the Round 2 website. I think you can order from them as well.
