Figure stand/base

From peanut butter lids, fancy liquor bottle lids, turned wood decorative trim, small picture frames ect...

Just keep the 'dead' or unused space to no more than 2" around the subject.

For a dynamic vignette create a fox hole or trench, most soldiers spend quite a bit of time below the ground to avoid shrapnel and other dangerous flying objects.

Show the subject it its element doing its job! Details will add continuity and realism to your figure(s) and tie the subject to the time period and location.  

One guy I know uses wall switch plates.  Also you can find a variety of pine wood plaques in stores like Hobby Lobby, and stain them or finish them as you like.

I guess 1.5" clear round plates would be perfect for me.  I don't know where to find them.

If you are just displaying your 1/35 scale figures, and they are the centerpiece, I like to use these cheap acrylic display boxes I get from Hobbylobby. They are available online as well. I usually cut a piece of styrofoam to fit the bottom, and coat the foam with hardware store wall plaster so it can be painted with some detail usually ground flock etc. I flip it over so that it opens up, with the short end used for the base. The height gives you a lot of options for 54mm or 1/35 scale figs. Hope this helps.
