Sculpting Hair on Figures
Posted by rdmeyersr on Friday, April 24, 2015 10:08 AM

My wife picked up a set of the Polar Lights KISS figures for me and I want to alter the hair of the figures to more closely resemble the actual people. What medium should I use? Miliput or 2 part epoxie? Any help and pointers to tutorials would greatly help! Thanks,

Ron

It's been a very long time since I built up those figures, Ron, and whatever pictures I had have gone missing over the years since the kits were originally released. From what I recall, you are absolutely right about the molded hair - it just looks strange without a little detail. I built up the subassemblies and clamped things down to minimize the gaps, gave things a quick rub down with a coarser grade of sandpaper, and then used a hot knife to texture and detail the hair. Use low heat and a steady hand to draw small, parallel lines to build up the hair, but be careful to start from the 'skin' and move outwards from there - looks a lot more natural and it lessens the chance of accidentally damaging the face or other details. It takes a little practice, but the technique is forgiving if you use a light touch. Give the hair a light scrub with a Scotch pad to knock down high points you might leave when you pull the knife from the plastic. A brush loaded with Testors liquid cement can be used to melt any loose strands of plastic pulled up by a tool which is running too hot. Just keep that "Destroyer" album cover nearby for easy reference!

Hi, Just thought I'd update this post. Found out I could do a much better job with Green STuff and Green Stuff liquid. I totally resculpted all four figures heads of hair, repositioned Ace's left leg, added more sequins to all costumes using the liquid GS, added Gene's horns on the boots and the missing bat wings. Added Pauls choker detail as well as Peter's wrist decoes which were missing. All painting so far done in acrylics.
