1:35 scale 90’s US infantry
Posted by panzermedic on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 5:24 PM

  Hello All,

I am building Tamiya’s M113a2, and doing the IFOR markings. I can’t seem to find scale US Infantry figures for that era. I want to make the AFV part of a checkpoint in Bosnia in 1996, so want figures for manning that position. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The IFOR guys were wearing the older PASGT vests and helmets. Some may have used the post ALICE LBE vests, while others still used ALICE LBE gear. Aside from the Tamiya and ICM US soldier sets, which would need their weapons replaced with M-16A2 or M-4 rifles, any Desert Storm type figures would work also, such as some of the Dragon sets. Just remember to have them in cold weather sleeves down mode.

For a checkpoint scene, the ICM figures would be ideal.

Dragon USA has acouple of figure sets that would work. I also believe ScaleHobbiest has acouple that would work. The set will display on the box art the US soldiers in the BDU uniform with the standard woodland camo pattern. You can paint them to suit the time period you are looking at. Good luck, and please post photos of your build once you get underway.

The Drifter and Stikpusher, thanks so much for the advice! Already looking at a couple kits thanks to you. I’m Painting up the AFV now, then put my idea into the next gear. I’ll try to post a pic, but I am still not very good at weathering, etc. I keep working at it though.

I would recommend the Dragon ODS-era figures.  Just about any of them will do as the uniforms and equipment hadn't really changed.  I would stay away from the Tamiya and ICM sets as they are pretty bad in my opinion.  The Tamiya figures are anemic (gear and weapons are good though) and the ICM guys are really lacking on details (pretty much just blobs of plastic).

Your welcome. I hope you do post some photos. Don't worry about how good you can weather your build. The old saying - Practice, Practice and more Practice. Enjoy your build.

Great suggestion - "I would stay away from the Tamiya and ICM sets as they are pretty bad in my opinion.  The Tamiya figures are anemic (gear and weapons are good though) and the ICM guys are really lacking on details (pretty much just blobs of plastic)." I'll be keeping that in the back of my head.

Thanks Everyone! I have gone ahead and purchased the Dragon 1st Infantry Division art #3015(?) to start with will look for some others to get a variety. Now I’m thinking a car and some civilian as a possibility. I also found some scale European road signs to possibly use. I will make a cement barrier from some foam I have that should carve up well.

Unfortunately, that is the one set that really won't work for Bosnia '96.  3 of the 4 soldiers (3 standing) are wearing MOPP chemical protective suits.  They were not worn in Bosnia since there was no chemical threat.  Any of their other ODS sets (101st ABN, 82nd ABN, USMC Tank Killers, US Sniper Team, US Light Infantry, US Marines, US Army "Desert Uniforms", etc.) will do though as they are all in standard BDUs/DBDUs.  If you have any questions, run by us which sets you are considering and we can give you an idea if they will work or not.

Thanks HeavyArty! I’m on it. I did look at the 101st set, but liked the poses on the other set. I’ll swap some limbs if need be to get the effect I need. I’m working from a pic I found on Pinterest of an IFOR checkpoint. I don’t want to replicate per day, just using as my thought process. Thanks for the help, you guys are great!

I don’t know. I never thought that the ICM guys were that bad. They appear on par with early Dragon figures. Not great, but not terrible, an dhardly blobs like old figures from way back when. And they match the standing around that is mostly what I remember from checkpoints...

I thought they were much softer on details than Dragon figures of the same era, but that is how I saw them.  Their poses are good; one reason I tried them.  That is how I saw them, your mileage may vary.
