Zvezda 1/35 Soviet Medics- W.I.P. 8/26 update
Posted by stikpusher on Thursday, April 5, 2012 4:58 PM

Since I am pretty much done with the K9 tank hunters I decided to delve into another Zvezda Soviet Figure set, the new Medic set.

These figures are really sweet so far. Minimal mold line cleanup, very nice molded detail, and excellent fit on the first two figures. I love how Zvezda gives you the option of having the PPSH  molded separately or with the grasping hand on the wounded figure. The female medic is nicely molded too Wink

Nice! I am still amazed that so many injected plastic figures these days are almost if not more detailed than resin ones from just a decade ago.

I love the infantryman- 'I am gravely wounded but I still will not give up my sub-machine gun...'

True that.

I've been eyeballing this kit online for a while and now seeing this, I might need to get my own set

The latest Zvezda figure sets that I have picked up (Soviet Paras Afghansitan, Soviet ReconTeam) have been quite nice. Not quite up to the latest Dragon sets, but certainly better than early Dragon. And on par if not superior to Tamiya's current figures. And they keep getting better.

Those do look like nice figures, but in the 2nd. pic the nurse looks like she is about to put the soldier out of his misery with a quick Hollywood-style necksnap...Indifferent

LOL Dre! Stick out tongue I think I will have to add something in her hand to look like some sort of pressure dressing.

Well I built the rest of the figures in the set. A casualty on a stretcher and two stretcher bearers. Zvezda's approach to the stretcher bearers was unique shall we say...

below you will see why the arms are not attached at this point.

as you can see the stretcher is molded in three parts with the handles molded into the hands already and the canvas portion as a separate piece

Painting is about to commence...

When it comes to the moulding and details of their 1/35  figures Zvezda has come a long way in just a just a couple of years, but what makes their figures stand out is in my opinion the original poses of the figures, for example inte the later German kits: Snipers, Volkssturm and Sturmpioneers.

Dragon seems to have got stuck with the now well established concept - "four germans hanging around just looking cool".

Agreed! Aside from the subject choices (I am pretty tired of most German figures in general), Zvezda lately seems to have really kicked it up a notch with their moldings, poses, and subject choices. The last few of their figure sets that I have bought are very pleasant to build.

Painting has begun on the medics so far.

As of this morning I had most of the basic colors done. Uniforms in Vallejo Soviet Uniform Green. Flesh base tones are Polly Scale and Model Master acrylics. Equipment is various Polly Scale, Polly S, and Model Master Acrylics.

this afternoon I added a wash of MM Burnt Sienna over the flesh to add tone and depth.

and some before and after pics

the front stretcher bearer

the rear stretcher bearer

and the female medic, who I am gonna call Tanya Wink (my favorite figure in the set)

I think that I will have her with light brown or dark blond hair... any suggestions of colors by MM, Polly Scale, or Humbrol to use for this?

I started the flesh colors on the casualties...

The specks on his face are just some debris picked up on handling and not paint...

and the litter casualty

Nice work Stikpusher, are you using them as a vignette or will they be placed in a diorama with a vehicle?

BTW: Tanya? With apologies to Dre she looks more like Natasha Neck-Breaker to me Indifferent

Natasha...Hmm I like that... Now we need moose and squirrel... I am trying to find other figures to do a possible vignette with, but I dont have any vehicle dioramas in mind. For now they are destined for the shelves alongside my WWII Soviet AFVs.

Well I sidelined these guys about 6 months ago for no real reason, aside from other builds having higher priority. Tonite I pulled them off the sideline and resumed work. I started painting the uniforms of the casualties. I am now pretty much convince that if I am going to use acrylics, I need to prime...weak translucent coverage in one coat on plastic.

the stretcher case

and Natasha's boy- I still need to paint his blouse but will be using an enamel paint (MM SAC Bomber Tan) for that one.

Second coats on the casualty figures to fix the translucence, and boots painted.

I used MM Israeli Armor Khaki for the trousers on both, then one guys blouse is SAC Bomber Tan and the other's is Polly Scale Israeli Armor Khaki. Interesting to see how two different companies take on the same color is not identical.

stretcher case has the two different shades of IDF Khaki

And the other guy with the SAC Tan blouse

Yes I know, but a certain Japanese Fighter Plane and USN Torpedo Plane are taking up most of my bench time ;-)

Oh ok, thought they could use a little contrast but wasn't sure how far you intended to go.
