Try Games Workshop.  I don't buy the stuff, but a friend does.  The newer kits are utterly fantastic, with deadly, sharp, pointed details that could easily poke an eye out!  Ignore the stupid colors on their box tops - if you paint them up with realistic colors, they look superb.  Check out these builds:

I use to do gaming miniatures and if you dont mind working with metal try looking for  Citidel miniatures. Or  Reaper miniatures. I felt the best dragon figures were made by Grenider but they have been OOP for a few years.

Found a lone kit from Sol on ebay.  If it is like their other kits, it is pvc type material.

Off the top of my head I can't think  of ever seeing one offered in injection plastic.  Most are likely single piece cast pewter or white metal.

Mcfarlane makes some fantastic detailed dragons, but they are ready for display type.

Thanks everybody.  I think a miniature might be the way to go.  I don't need an actual kit, a complete metal, resin, or plastic figure would work.  I think a minimum of 6 inches long will work for me, so I might be able to find a gaming miniature.

Those are some nice choices, the Games Workshop stuff is really well detailed. On the other hand they are expensive. Personally I'll second Reaper as having just as good detail as well as being a great deal cheaper.

They have a search engine on their website and I got 161 hits on a search for 'dragon' - many of them are dragonmen or other dragonlike monsters but still there's a good amount of dragons there too.

For example: Stormwing - $60 bucks but he's solid pewter and 9.5 inches tall with a wingspan of 14 inches.

Or Diabolus also $60 with a length and wingspan of a foot.

They do have a number of smaller cheaper dragons as well.

Ironwindmetals also has a line of pewter dragons but their stuff is over twenty years old and not anywhere near as detailed but they are a great deal cheaper though for the size I don't think they're as great a value as the Reaper products.

I like that Diabolus.  It looks about the right size and pose for my needs.

I forgot the Ral Partha   line of miniatures. sorry.

My local Michael's arts & craft store have really nicely detailed plastic dragons that are about a foot long. They are painted and have quite a variety of types/styles of these dragons. I am not sure about the price, but most Sunday papers have a Michael's flyer with a 40-50% off coupon in it. You can also download one from their website.

Their dragons are in an aisle close to their models along with other wild animals and farm animals. I'd guesstimate they are between 1/48 and 1/35 scale depending on how big you picture a "real" dragon to be.

The only model kit that comes to mind is the giant Draco the dragon from the movie Dragonheart. Revell-Monogram's ProModeler series did a vinyl kit in 1/24th scale.

I forget who made it, but there used to be a wonderful metal figure called Terronus, the Mother of all Dragons, and it was almost a foot long and was one of the neatest dragons I have ever worked on.  Unfortunatley, she is in pieces, did not survivie a move, otherwise I would post a picture.  Good luck.

My wife paints Dragons in 25mm scale, but has just purchased this kit. It is MOST impressive!

There's a model of the creature from 'The Relic' which is sorta like a dragon.  I thought about getting that, I think it'd build into an impressive display piece.  

Too bad Ral Partha isn't around anymore.  They had some great dragon kits back in the day...

They have a range of very large Dragons (28mm)

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I found a nice plastic toy dragon at Michael's.  Not the perfect size, but close enough.  I'll fill the seams and change the paint and it should work just right for me.
