Painting the "Red Baron" Figure

Something like green on third figure of this illustration?

I'd say an olive green or even Tamiya's XF-13 J.A. Green.

If it's the more drab looking shade you want, any version of the field-grey German uniform colour should do.

Thanks Jack for the image...the Bayern colors are what I was looking for...however the illustration appears too dark compared to other figure models I've seen on the internet.

After some further research, it was with a Prussian unit that Manfred had begun his military career.  So in those photos that he is seen wearing a dark tunic, it is the formal dress, or pre-war dark blue Ulanka.  In the field, he would wear the feldgrau (field grey) version of the Ulanka, neither of which are regulation aviator uniforms.

I have a feeling these are not the colours you envisioned for your bust, but there might be a third option.  Given his status, there is a possibility he could have had a  custom tailored tunic, but who knows what colour that could have been.

You'd be correct to paint the Ulanka in field gray.  You may find the color off-the-shelf, or you might mix your own.

Regarding the Prussian blue Ulanka, that would have been a dress uniform, and yes, Richthofen likely had his from a tailor.  But he probably did not wear it after the war started.  The Germans implemented the field gray uniform in 1910, I believe it was, and the old uniforms were relegated to parades and ceremonial occasions.  I've never seen a photo of Richthofen in the old dress uniform.

Thanks for posting those, Jack!  I had never seen the photo of Richthofen in his full dress.

As to this kit, if I'm not mistaken, the bust depicts the photo that is on the box lid, which is the same as or very similar to, the second photo of the field gray uniform.
