Check out Amazing Figure Modeler Magazine. They tend to do monster/fantasy type figures rather than historical but the techniques are very similar.

Lots of back issues on ebay for pretty cheap.

They also sell 2 painting DVD's, They seem to be pretty popular but I cannot personally vouch for them.

If you like AFM you might also check out Modelers Resource and Kitbuilders. Both of these have ceased publication but are all over ebay.
