1/10th Sioux Indian Bust
Posted by Bish on Sunday, May 10, 2015 4:23 PM

Over the last couple of years my better half has been buying me models for my birthday. But she likes to buy me models that I probably would not buy myself and so likes to give me a challenge. One of the first she bought me, and the only one I have completed until now, was the Airfix 72nd 0/400, not bad for someone who had never rigged a plan before. Then last year she decided to get me a bust, a bit of a challenge for someone who had only recently got to grips with 35th figures, especially the faces. But rather than an SS figure, or a Luftwaffe pilot or something else I might be more familiar with, she got me this one.

Feeling daunted isn't the word. I started on it at the end of Nov, just to keep her happy, and have been working on it here and there and then spent the last week just getting stuck in. As is often the case, the things I was concerned about, in this build the face, feathers and decoration, were not nearly as bad as I thought.

The kit went together really well and its a lovely detailed model. I mostly used Acrylics and oils for washes. I used the box as a guide and just tried to copy the colours there. I am really pleased with the end result, and more importantly so is she. Now she wants to get me a collection of busts and is already lining up my next birthday pressie, Hopefully I can carry some of what I have done here over to my 35th figures and improve those even more.

Ok, enough waffle, here the pics.

Thanks for looking. All comments suggestions or advice are very welcome.

``  You sir, are now just showing off.  lol      I think you did a really nice job, especially on the face, hand and hair.  That is tough on a large figure.  The eyes and expression make him look so sad that i'm half expecting to see a tear roll down his cheek. I hope you are proud of this work.  I would be.                 knox

Bish, a pleasant surprise from you, both the subject choice and the figure painting.  Very well done! Yes

regards,

Jack

Bish, I spent a few years in South Dakota where I taught English on the Crow Creek reservation. I spent an awful lot of time haunting the Atka Lakota museum and generally acquainting myself with the Lakota culture. I think that you've done a remarkable job with your choice of colors - very authentic! Love the expression in the eyes. Nice work!

Thank you very much guys, it means a lot.

knox, ye, he does look rather sad doesn't he. And ye, I am rather proud of it, I have surprised myself.

Jack, coming from the figure master, that means a lot. It surprised me when I unwrapped it as well. I dread to think what she will get me next time.

Knight, thank you. I can only assume the guy who painted the one on the box had some good reference material, I would not have known where to start. Coming with someone with first hand experience, that's very nice to hear, thank you.

Extraordinary, Bish!  Very appealing and well-executed.  Faces are not easy to do, but this is stunningly realistic!

What kind of paint did you use?  I gave up on figures after Imrie/Risley discontinued their line of figure paints years ago.

Looks like you've opened up a whole new area of interest for yourself!

Excellent work there Bish! And I thought you only did tanks and planes! I hope the Mrs. gets you another figure if it turns out half as well as this one.

Thanks guys.

Check, I used Tamiya Acrylics for the clothing. But for the skin, I have a set of paints from scale 75 I got last year, its designed especially for painting skin with a guide to both white and Indian skin. Its really helped me improve my 35th figures and seems to have worked here to.

Gamera, well it doesn't hurt to do something different now and again. I have wanted to do a bust for a while now, but I was thinking more of a WW2 German figure myself. I was just waiting until my face painting had improved. The Mrs is on about getting a cabinet just to put busts in, so I think I may be getting some more. She knows I am interested in Classical Roman history, and I have wanted to do a Roman bust. I reckon the next one will either be a Roman or an Egyptian. Though knowing her, she might throw me a complete curve ball and get something totally unexpected.

Time will tell.
