Hey, that's cool! 50 bucks? I couldn't see any indication of how big it is.

War Mumak? Forgive my Tolkien ignorance, but I thought those things were called "Oliphants," or something similar. Is a "War Mumak" an Oliphant dressed for battle?

Zoiks! Pounds it is! Thanks!

Like the size of the kit, I didn't see any clear pricing other than "50.00."
Just assumed it was bucks.
*Edit* Just had another look at it, still can't see where it indicates pounds...unless it's that bracket-like mark to the left of the 50.00? Ah, I reckon that's a pound sign.

Anybody have any idea what scale this thing is?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think this line is 30mm.

The GW Lotr game is 25 mm, smaller than 40k. Here's the link to the US site:
http://us.games-workshop.com/games/lotr/bopf/catalog/War_Mumak_Harad.htm
I have no idea why its £50 from the UK store and $65 from the US store. I think Mumak is the Elven name and Oliphant is the name in common speech.

Even at $65.00 it's too expensive for my budget, but it would be fun to paint. Thanks for the Heads Up.

If it's 12 inches tall and has all the figures illustrated, $65 USD is not a bad price, given a 54 mm resin figure is $12-15 and a very economical mounted 54mm is $30 and would be about a third the size of this.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

"Oliphants" is what Sam calls them. Mumak is what the people who use them call them in their native language.

Hope that helps.

This thing isn't resin, it's injection-molded plastic, just like a normal model kit. In the LotR, Oliphaunt is a colloquial phrase used by hobbits and certain other men of the West to describe Mumakil. Mumakil is apparently the word used by the Haradrim for their huge war beasts, though Tolkien does not make this clear (he says so in an early draft of the LotR, but took it out in the final draft).

By the way, Oliphaunt is a real Old English word. It's where the word elephant comes from. It's roots are in the old Germanic word for camel, strangely enough.

This model comes with a bunch of Haradrim crew as well. Very impressive -- and the base -- which has dead Rohirrim and their horses and equipment strewn all over it -- is a beautiful model in its own right. It's meant for gaming, but with a little work it would make a very impressive display model. It would certainly tower over that 1/72nd scale Extratech M10 which set you back $35!

I just got one of these for only $45. The fit isn't so great, but the detail is great. What you don't see in the pics is the base, which is full of dead horses and riders. I'll post pics when I'm done.

To solve the riddle I grabbed out the tolkien companion book written by j. e. a. tyler and looked up Mumak or Mumakil amd thus to quote "The origin of this word is not known although it maybe in the language of the Men of Harad . The Mumakil were pachyderms, giant war beasts known to the Hobbits (in tales only) as Oliphaunts."

Hubby, madmike and I are both long time War of the Ring (aka Lord of the Ring) fans.

Cheers
