Old newb aircraft question
Posted by Bis on Friday, June 8, 2018 10:24 PM

I'm just about finished with the fuselage on my P51. It's been 45 plus years since I have built a wood/paper aircraft.

 My questions are

1 Do you use Elmers white glue to attach the paper?

2 After the paper has dried, it seems to me that you sprayed it with water to tighten the paper, is that correct?

 3 I went to the nearest hobby shop (80 miles away) to get some dope but they didn't stock it, can I use matte finish (Krylon rattle can) after the paper dries?

 4 Can I then spray the model with acrylic paint over the matte  finish ?

 Sorry for all the basic question, thanks for any help.

Hi;

 My answers are as follows . As for cementing the paper to the frame . I use Specifically thinned ALEENS Craft glue .

 After it is completely dry spritz it with Distilled water . Let dry in the sun or under a GENTLE heat light !

 Do Not use Krylon ! Use Testors Model Master Clear Coat ( Matte )

 Once the plane is completely dry , Mask the Canopy with Masking tape rubbed through your finger to take off most of the stickiness .Then Spray with your chosen Acrylics .

     I hope you have good luck on finishing . Remember , Plan each step before doing it . Tissue and paper models are not forgiving of mistakes at all !     T.B.

Tank builder- thanks for the reply, I'll check hobby lobby Monday for the items you mentioned. I appreciate the response.

For tissue covered balsa models, nothing shrinks and strengthens tissue like model airplane (or real airplane) dope.  Yes, they still make it.  An easier to find alternative is clear lacquer.

Don Stauffer- so if I use dope or lacqure, then I don't have to pre shrink the paper? Also, can I brush the lacqure on.

Thank for the info.
