Looking for help.. NCC-1701-A enterprise , decals ? and which kit ?
Posted by p38jl on Friday, August 9, 2013 10:06 AM

Hello.. I recently acquired a stash wreck of the Enterprise.. I think its the A.. the engine nacells are the rectangular( looking head on )..

I am rebuilding it.. nothing fancy.. but shelf condition...

I am missing the decals ? any aftermarket ? and is this the AMT kit ? its pretty big.. any other identifiers that can help me out ??

If it's almost 3 feet long, it's probably the 1/350 scale model from Polar Lights.

You can find aftermarket items for it at

http://www.culttvmanshop.com/

Not sure if they have decals, though.  But as I recall, the only decals are lettering, "NCC-1701-A   Enterprise" on the front top of the saucer. You could do this with a sheet of black "alphabet" decals, or of course print your own.

If it's 2 feet or more, it's the Polar Lights model referred to above.

Yeah, the old AMT kit is big, about a foot and a half to two feet. The Polar Lights one Chuck refers to is friggin' HUGE, about three feet or so.

The AMT kit is still a pretty good model, just watch for the nacelle pylon (the two rear ones) fit to the secondary hull. It's only a small piece of plastic with a lot of weight on it, you might want to place a pin inside it or otherwise brace it.

The kit can be built as either the refit/movie 1701 (the first three original movies) or the 1701A (the last three original movies). You should be able to find plenty of decals at either CultTVMan as Chuck noted. I bought a bunch of stuff from Federation Models- I looked at their site and there are several sets listed for the refit/movie and 1701A there too. I don't remember what brand mine are but they look great (haven't used them yet).

I did just see some decals for the 18" AMT kit.. but it shows the rounded nacelles front.. not the rectangular..

The easiest way to identify an AMT Enterprise is by the rough texture of the kit. This was done after the initial Star Trek: The Motion Picture version. That kit was very smooth, came with dry transfer markings, battery compartment, lights and is often referred to as the "smoothie".

The next versions had a rough texture to give a more "lifelike" surface. The lighting was removed, but portions of the hull where the batteries would go in showed signs that it was designed to be removed.

The 1701-A had a very short movie life; it was shown in the final scene (just about a minute) in Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home and in both STV and VI.

This site has some good information and stuff for sale regarding the Enterprises. Just make sure you know which kit you have; you don't want to buy a set for an entirely different scale vehicle!

It has a rough texture to it.. not real rough, but not smooth,,. some of the windows and portals are open like it could have been lit.. but when I got it, the major parts were assembled, so I can't see inside the hull, saucer or engines.. The mounting stand has no place for batteries or anything..  mostly I'm cleaning seams, filling cracks, reglueing and clamping where its come apart..

If it's the AMT kit it's the 1/537 model - 22 inch I think. AMT makes a small 1/1000 scale kit too so don't confuse them!

On the Federation Models site I found several sets under AMT 1/537 Enterprise Refit

JTG-18-A and JTG-18-B from JT Graphics

PNT-4533 and a few more from PNT Decals

Sorry- friggin' Federation Models website won't let me direct link

Yep, that's the old AMT "roughie", all right.

I like the guy standing on it...reminds me of someone.

Looks good, but seems like the primer red will be a PITA to cover in light grey.

Now I'm wondering if she's going to be the USS Manstein NCC--2290 (guess it's ok to add a zero eh?)
