Star Wars S.T.A.P. (any suggestions/tips for improving Droid-Stap fit and/or landing a STAP?)
Posted by FlyItLikeYouStoleIt on Thursday, January 2, 2014 3:18 PM

I got this kit dirt cheap in St. Paul at Scale Model Supplies. In my opinion, it should be classified as at least a level 3 difficulty or maybe I'm just stupid. And I'm only talking about the vehicle. The droid? Holy crap they weren't even thinking about how it would fit the STAP except that they positioned the forearms correctly for the hands to grab the controls. I only wish I had foreseen the difficulty joining droid to machine. I would have made some changes to foot controls, among other things, to make the fit better.

But, so far I've completed the vehicle.  I was going for the well-used, worn-down look.

She was a learning experience and required lots of seam hiding (gun barrels, fuselage) and such

I have a few more "completed" pics as well as some WIP pics and build specifications if anyone is interested.

Anybody know how to land a STAP? Reference material for this machine is very limited. I have found NOTHING that shows how a STAP is parked when not in use. It has no landing gear so I assume it attaches to some sort of "rack" when not in use. I intend to scratch something out for a landing rack. Probably just create some purely utilitarian, chunky, "StarWarsy" looking contraption.

And, anybody with some helpful tips on making the droid fit the machine, please post your tips here. So far, I'm thinking of breaking the droids ankles and refitting them to match foot controls ???

Wow, even in the Star Wars nerd website's forums, nobody seems to know how to land a STAP. I suppose they could remain floating in air like the Land Speeder or Speeder Bike but the STAP has a couple points on the lower half that look like they could serve as attachment points.

I need to clean mine up, dig out the droid and refit it to the STAP, and post it on here.

Not only is the reference material for the STAP very limited its appearance in the movies is very, very limited. It would be nice if someone who "knows all" about some of these well known and not so well known Sci-Fi vehicles would put together some good reference volumes with good color photos or at least some very photo realistic illustrations in a walk around style like you find in reference books for armor and aircraft. I've seen reference material for certain movie vehicles and spacecraft but it seems like they're never as thorough as you need them to be.

Outstanding work! I love the finish you achieved on this little vehicle!

The STAP just remain floating above the ground when not in use.

According to Wookipedia, "Repulsorlifts used minimal power and were reliable enough to be utilized continuously"

May I ask what kit this is? I love the STAP and I'd like to build a model of one...

Do you know if there are any figures of clone troopers out there?

It's an old AMT kit that came out around the time Episode 1 was released in theaters. Your best bet in finding one may be on Ebay.

Thanks, Clemens and JimNTENN! This is the kit from which I built this STAP:

It was quite cheap and I wish I would've picked up all they had. Could've sold most of em and still built my own droid army. By the way, it's not little. At 1/6 scale, this thing stands 13 inches (approx 33 cm) tall. As for any Clone Trooper models, I don't know of any kits that you can build yourself but there are some very nice quality figures out there. Check out this one by Sideshow Collectibles:

Thanks for the quick reply! Those figures look really nice! I think I'll buy one of them and modify it to be a static figure as well as repaint it completely...

In video game canon, from the Battlefront game, the STAP just hovered above the ground when not in use.

nice. i've got the pod racer, but not built it. for storage and transport, i'd imagine they have some kind of rack like they use to transport the droids en masse.

a couple of episodes Anakin actually commandeers a STAP as an improvised transportation.
