Flying Sub; Aurora VS. Moebius
Posted by Sprue-ce Goose on Thursday, September 18, 2014 12:59 PM

I happened across a Moebius Flying sub and was surprised by the size of the 1/32 scale kit as I had once built the AURORA kit during the early 1970s.

.

I do recall hearing that Monogram had re-issued the old AURORA kit after buying the molds but was out of the hobby and never saw the re-issue.

.

I must admit, I hesitate to buy and build the 1/32 scale kit even though it is the only version currently available with a plastic interior like the old AURORA kit.

I did buy the smaller (1/128 scale?) kit but would like to see the old AURORA kit re-issued.......or a 1/72 scale version.

.

Would anyone else prefer the original, smaller scale re-issue or are fellow Flying Sub fans satisfied with the larger 1/32 scale kit and simply clear some extra space on their shelves?

Just curious.

I am currently building a Möbius Flying Sub, don't know the scale, it is maybe 4" max across?

I Don't care;

If I find one ,no matter the size , I 'm getting it and building it . I like that kit . P.S. The one in the    "Submarine, Sea-View " Kit is really teensy .

The 1/128th scale Flying Sub is a bit small, but might eventually fit well into a diorama flying past the snapping jaws of a same scale model of carsanab

Do Moebius Flying Sub builders also have at least one , 1/32 scale aircraft to pose next to the Moebius kit in order to emphasize how large the actual sub would be?

That would be interesting to do, but there's also an aftermarket set of pilot and passengers for the flying sub.  That would probably help with scale.  Or better, get the landing gear kit, set it on the tarmac and add a recent 1/32 scale aircraft tug to pull it into the hanger.  :-)

I have all three, the really bit Seaview, the 1/32 scale flying sub and the 1/128 scale flying sub kit.  Haven't started any of them yet, but the kits are awesome.

Those kits sure are awesome !

.

I'd like to own the big Seaview and become a BIG SEAVIEW GROUPIE but don't have the space ..............did settle for the 1/350 Seaview; MUCH nicer than the old AURORA kit I used to own.

.

Aftermarket figures for the sub would be nice !

I've wondered if the old Monogram 1/32 figures from their Afrika Korps German armored car would be suitable as ground crew in a diorama of that 1/32 Flying sub on some uncharted desert isle..................alongside figures of Ginger and Mary Ann....Stick out tongueWhistling

What is the "wingspan" on the 1/128  one? The one am building is maybe 4" at the largest.

Oddly. I've seen posts about the original AURORA kit being listed as either 1/48th or 1/60th.

I see there are a number of 1970s re-issues on evilbay.

May eventually try buying from that venue.

True enough; box scale ruled for all kits for many years..

The three similarly sized sci-fi Aurora kits, the Invaders UFO is listed as 1/72, the Land of the Giants Spindrift is 1/64 and the Flying Sub is 1/60. You'd think logic would dictate to stay with a constant scale, but even MPC went all over the place with the original Star Wars kits in 1977 as did Monogram with the Battle Star Galactica kits in 1978 and MPC again with Disney's The Black Hole in 1979. Of all those original sci-fi kits, only R2-D2 and C3PO were probably the same scale on purpose.

I seem to recall the Invaders UFO , Flying Sub and Bleepity Bleep Wink Tracy Space Coupe shared at least the seated figures despite being various box scales.

I thought the smaller Mobius kit was supposed to be from the larger TV version of the Seaview

That is my presumption.
The kit also includes the two other vehicles that are in the 1/128 Seaview.

I will make you feel bad . I have three of the original Flying Subs .Trouble is one crashed into a seamount .( on Purpose .) The other two are untouched in de box . My SeaView is built of four sections and is a monster when taped together . Now if they would release the original ship from the movie "Fantastic Voyage " , instead if the cartoon version , which looks nothing like the film version , I would be happy .

TB,

So, you've got three original Aurora kits? Awesome! Love to see the Seaview "monster" and how you did it. I have a Wilco Models resin kit of the Proteus sub from FV movie that hasn't been built yet... someday though. Its about 1/48 scale and is mostly accurate with some exceptions.

The Proteus was also done in a vacuum kit a long time ago.  It was probably around 1/72nd but not sure.  I had one but it managed to disappear in my travels.

I just now did a web search and notice that a 1/48 scale kit was released some years ago

Oh ;

Well I've only still just started it . It seems bigger than my client's ship ! Each of the hulls quarters are at least 10-1/2 " to 12 '" long . It is indeed a monster and the bow viewing room is three stories tall ! In scale of course !

I did manage to get the drawings done for lighting that section .Two colored LED's will do the job . This is like trying to build the 1/200 Arizona on a folding card table .LOL.LOL.LOL.             T.B.

I built the old Aurora/Monogram flying sub when it first came out.  For its day it had some impressive interior detail.  Although I have the Mobius kit, I wouldn't mind having the older one too.  They had one at the Nationals here a couple years back but the dealer wanted about 40.0 for it and for a kit that I originally paid about 5.00 for, I thought it was a bit much.

The link for Starship Modeler isn't working.

I was just looking at some of the interior framework from that AURORA Flying Sub kit;Ejector pin marks allover the parts.............the kit did have some impressive detail for the day, though.
.
I have noticed the price on e-bay for the 1990s Monogram re-issues seems to have jumped up quite a bit for some reason.
.
I actually sent a request to Moebius asking that either a 1/72 or 1/48 scale version be issued so it can match with aircraft or vehicles as the old AURORA kit doesn't match any of the popular scales and the 1/32 scale kit is expensive.
.
Try this link:
.
for a build of the AURORA kit.....
and again for the proteus

A 1/30something scale Flying sub on landing gear dio needs a tow tractor and a tow bar with a very confused CC/PC.

Mind, somebody repainting/buffing out circular scars from giant squid attacks could be interesting.

Someone produced a resin landing gear set for the 1/32 Flying sub kit................I have been watching the tv series re-runs but have not yet seen such equipment used in the show.Hmm

.

Circular scars from a giant squid attack............now that would definitely be an authentic bit of weathering for the 1/128 scale Seaview model.........Surprise....be nice to see AK products or Vallejo issue a "squid attack" pigment set for that....Big SmileWink

.something like the "bullet hole" decals for full size autos.....................Hmm
.....wonder what would be equivalent to the stick on baseball lodged in the windscreen gag ...........
.
...........maybe the hull displaying a broken tooth or two from the "Moby Richard " whale that appeared in a couple of episodes..............Surprise
