You can get a little set of pliers at home depot for about $5 that have flat surfaces. I also put some tamiya tape over the insides, just to be sure I don't mar the PE..

Ones with a flat wide surface. Avoid any with 'grip' or grooves in them.

Its best to have just the 'tag' sticking out to file / sand. That way its impossible to damage the part.
