Yamato 2199's Cosmo Falcon in 1/72, from Bandai
Posted by CallSignOWL on Sunday, August 2, 2015 10:08 AM

Our club had a display at a local comic-con, and while we were encouraged to bring any models we want, I wanted to have something "sci-fi" to bring. All the "sci-fi" I have done is my ZOID! While I didnt get this kit completed in time, I was able to get pretty far.

A quick peek inside the local HobbyTown gave me this thing:

Its the "Cosmo Falcon" from the anime "Space Battleship Yamato 2199"....Ive never even heard of the show, but the plane looks cool. This kit has really sharp moldings. LIke, I wish aircraft kits came this way! I dont care that its multi-colored, this is really nice plastic.

Even though its a snap tite, its marketed towards older modelers, not little kids. For example, the box includes a full sheet of water-slide decals!

(aww yeah sharkmouth!!)

The instruction booklet has full color pages, that I assume, go into detail about the kit and the plane featured in teh anime. I say assume, because it's entirely in Japanese. All of it.

(I think this says something important?)

I of course am not one to leave it in plain plastic, however fantastically multicolored it may be.

more soon!

I got a bit busy and forgot to take WIP pics, but the body of the plane has been built.

I actually had to do minor surgery! The big blue piece that was the top of the fuse was about 1/16 inch TOO LONG!?!

So....I trimmed some plastic out of the middle, and sanded everything smooth.

Other than that, all the pieces fit perfectly. The wings and tail just slot right in to their tabs snugly, and there are no gaps at teh wingroots at all. There were multiple times I got caught saying that model airplane manufacturers really need to take some tips from BANDAI! Bow Down

I fondly remember this show it aired in Japan in approximately 1979.  I used to visit my grandmother in the summer.  It was based on the original Yamato that was secretly turned into a space cruiser/battleship.  It was so cool.  This is way before Anime was popular in the U.S. Thank you for sharing, you've brought fond memories of my time in Japan especially my grandmother.

If any readers here have NOT seen this latest incarnation of the venerable series, YOU REALLY NEED TO. The new series Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is by far one of the BEST anime anything I have watched in YEARS, it was so good I watched all 26 episodes again the week. I got my DVD off Ebay and it was very much worth looking for.

while waiting for the paint to dry, I started work on the display stand. Its a neat little model in its own right, with adjustable sections that allow you to chance the angle and height of the display

some quick thinking by some model buddies saved the build! Since the flat lacquer fogged, I sprayed a clear gloss lacquer over the offending areas. The lacquer carrier re-absorbed the flat fog, and became clear again!

ta-daaa!!

 Cosmo Falcon is Complete!

There were some fit issues, namely the top fuselage being off by 1/8th of an inch (?!) It's a nice little kit, but i'd say it's overpriced for its size--the price can run $35 to $40 for a plane that's not much more than 6 inches long...

Any who...pics!
