Cue the Klingon theme, Polar Lights' K'tinga is finally here!  And what a stupendously massive model it is.  And it is just sweating fine detail everywhere!  Some friends came over this weekend and we had an informal unboxing.  Some parts were clipped off their sprues and the major components were dry fitted to see just how big this beast was - and it didn't disappoint!

That's Polar Lights' 1/1000 TOS D-7 next to the K'tinga.  Stalin was right - quantity has a quality of its own!  And there's lots of quality in this large quantity kit!

Speaking of quantities, I'll get the scale issue out of the way right now so we can all forget about it and move on.  The 1/1000 D-7 is 10-1/4 inches, which works out to about 850 feet "full scale".  The 1/350 K'tinga is 24 inches, which comes out to 700 feet.  People have commented on this discrepancy, pointing out the hammerhead and neck at the command bulb are too small to accomodate a 6 foot tall person.  I'm OK with that because movie props, full scale sets, and commercial model kits will always have scale mismatches.  For the purists who demand absolute and definitive scale resolutions between all of them, good luck and have a nice life.  For me, I regard the issue like a Klingon regards table manners.  Pass the Gah!

Always amused me that Kirk replicates a super short bathrobe for the Illiabot and she wears it all over the ship. Not that I'm complaning- Khambatta had a great pair of legs. Just I imagine Sisko or Picard would have come up with something a little less skimpy- but you know Kirk!!!  

Well, I have always referred to ST:TMP as Star Trek: The Pajama Party.  All the uniforms looked like PJs!  Yeah, try making a fembot wear skimpy clothes in the 21st century, and the PC police will arrive in no time!

Hmm, HobbyLink Japan has it listed now- $146.50 US with the optional lighting kit for $77.04.

How about a Persis Khambatta lamp, with the lightbulb that screws into the top of her head?  That would blow the leg lamp from “A Christmas Story” out of the water for sure!  And combine an Alexa type device which always adresses you “Gamera Unit” and refers to your friends as carbon based life forms infesting your living room.

It would assure you a life of celibacy.

The kit is just so honking huge, and I have no business buying more gigantic models.  But I am so excited it’s coming in a month or so!

Very cool! And a good choice, being probably the top 'bad guy' ship on the ST series. And heck the thing has been in what, four out of six series? The original (I'll count the Kirk era movies in with it), obsolete ships in The Next Generation, and mothballed ships thrown into the Dominion War in Deep Space Nine. Plus the rather improbable appearance in Enterprise- which would indicate these ships have been in service for over two hundred years and pre-date the Federation and it's first starships. 

Personally I'd normally prefer the original series D-7 but frankly it'd be a kinda boring model since it really didn't have any surface detail.

Not something I'm going to rush out like the 1/350th Enterprise kits because to be honest I never cared much for the Klingons, the Romulans being much more my style. But hey if I can find one for a good price in the coming years I'll pull the trigger.

Still my personal feelings aside it's a great choice!!! Bravo Round II!!!  

I'm excited !! This is great news, we haven't had a fresh kit/mold of this subject since the release of the Motion Picture back in 1979 !! The prototype looks amazing.

Well it looks great to me! If I get the spare cash one day, perhaps I’ll grab one. They have some other good looking upcoming stuff on their site as well. 

Will be interesting to see the test shots in June.

Uh oh, another huge kit I must have but have no room for. Glad I have finally learned alittle patience as "I want it.....YESTERDAY!" LOL. cool kit.

One caveat is that the photos are of a 3-D print.  The actual model kit may have reduced or compromised detail due to limitations in the injection molding process.  And Round 2 isn't Bandai.  It will be interesting to see how the plating around the command pod "bulb" and the band of windows are handled.  Notice the front of the "kidney bean" bridge is a separate part to render detail.

I had read the release date was around September 2018, which is actually very soon.  I wonder if that is a realistic timeline?  I won't get my forehead bumps in a knot if the date slips to 2019.  I just hope it is a great kit.

Thnaks for posting that G, i had not heard of this kit. I was planning on getting the AMT kit, but this will be nicer. Will be a good size as well.
