I am eagerly waiting for more progress shots of the Icarus!

BTW: That much be one big kitten to leave a huge shadow on the moon like that.

As Icarus travels to Ape Planet the astronauts made a short stop to stretch their legs.

Work continues on the Icarus. She is greedy for my attention and she is not ready to end this long running build. Progress is slow, but moving.

I keep getting called about my 'car warranty'.

I'm sure Clapper is behind this...

Probably trying to drum up work for his cousin Sam Clapper who he claimed is a mechanic...

I think they're all wrapped up in the Monkey Mob...

I'm praying the Icarus won't end up as a lawn dart.

Amen brotha. That makes the two of us.

This model has fought  me hard since I finished the interior. I feel like our model God has turned against me. I am dangling from a string and he says, "YOU THINK YOU ARE ALMOST DONE? HA! THIS PROJECT WILL NOT END UNTIL I SAY SO."

Maybe Clapper has something to do with this. It would explain why he ran and that he is on the lam. Tongue Tied

Let me reiterate here. If I finish this thing you will hear a shout so loud that it will echoe around the world. People will say, "Hey! That was BAKSTER! He finished ICARUS!" Wink

What a sad statement. The trials and tribulations of Steve's Icarus build.

Ok. Done complaining. Back to it.

I darned near choked on my coffee when I saw this pic from Cliff....didn't even have to read the text to crack up.

Too busy laughing to read your progress report, Steve. I'll get to it. :)

Sorry Greg about your coffee. I hope you're not going to ask me to come mop up your kitchen... Embarrassed

On the contrary, any one who can make me laugh out loud before my morning coffee more likely deserves an award.

Well Clapper alway liked a good jam session and that baboon has some big booty so it's a good trap for him.

Good luck with the decals. I know what you mean when the blasted things don't want to stick. I'm praying the Icarus won't end up as a lawn dart.

An alert was issued Clapper was found. It turns out, it was just a bigfoot. The search continues...

Yesterday, I repaired the damaged decals. I think I held my breath the entire time. It will be a miracle if the work survives until I mount it. As it is, a flag fell off in the process of re-applying the stripes. Fortunately, I was able to reapply with no discernable difference. I used a little white glue to help it stick. These decals absolutely suck. I also had a setback with the base. You won't believe it. I didn't. More on that another time. But--a path remains for the win.

An old Saturday Night Live skit comes to mind when I work on this. Dan Akroyd plays as Nixon and he says to Kissinger (Belushi) "Henry, get down on your knees and pray with me." That seems appropriate about now. Pray with me, Henry. Pray with me. Black Eye

Sorry guys...

Clapper escaped...

He fashioned this cunning decoy out of one of my old socks. After three days of it not moving I became a bit worried and shook it causing it to fall off the sofa. He did mention something about 'hitchhiking his way west', so you guys should keep a look-out for him.

Wow

That Clapper is a smart Ape. Do you ever wonder if he is the prodigy that starts the Ape Rebellion? I do. I wonder that. And now--he is wandering the countryside unsupervised. Who knows what trouble he might start.

We might want to send out a BOLO for any clapping apes.

I think Clapper is at Gams house because I couldn't stand the constant clapping. Gam is more patient than I am.

Gam? Is Clapper by you? Maybe he can weigh in on this.

Updated my last post to say, clear colored paint. A person wouldn't see anything through the sides unless it was clear colored.

Sorry about that.

Just a thought...

You can only see the model/diorama from 3 sides at the same time.

Pick a side to be the "backside" of the dio, and mount a mirror to the back.  ( make sure you dont pick a side that will prevent you from seeing the interior)

Now you can "hide" the battery anywhere behind the mirror.

I dont know if this fits in with what you envisioned ... feel free to ignore ... I promise not to use my " mind powers" on you.

It is a good thought,Tim. And you are right about the backside not being seen. And by design I put the power plug on the backside. I will toss your idea around some.

I thought about attacking this severals ways. I thought about scrapping the whole seeing through the sides thing and then make graphics I'd tape to the inner plexy walls. The graphics could be scenes from the movie, or pics of the cast, or even some of the fun stuff on this thread. The walls would look like movie posters. Going this route would simplify things immensely.

Currently, the plan is to make a crude sea floor. I don't foresee being able to see much of it from the outside once the interior walls are sprayed. Though, it is clear colored paint, it will diminish seeing much detail. But that is part of the plan because of wiring and things like that. Aside from painting the walls, I could leave them clear, but I just don't think it will look right with colored water on the top and clear sides. That is yet another option. Overall, with this option, I think the dio would benefit most with the walls painted. It will make the dio look like a cube of water while giving a sence of being able to peer into it.

The other part of the current plan is this. I plan on installing flickering LEDs to the base, probably mounted on rigid wires that will align the LEDs so they go into the engine nozzles. The effect I am going after is a simulation where the engines are still partially firing, or that the hot engine bells are gassing or reacting with the water. The effect will be seen from above the dio, and I am sure from the sides.

And that is the part of the plan causing me the most angst. It massivley complicates things. The question becomes in how do I wire things keeping power to a ship that can be lifted up and peered into, while not having internal wires tethered to the leds secured to the base. It's a complex problem when considering the aesthetics and keeping it functional. I came up with a plan in how to accomplish this but, is it worth the effort. This is filled with potential pitfalls and in the end, how will it look peering in from the sides and how functional will it end up being. I might not be able to pull off the believability aspect.

And another option is to do the graphics thing whereby hiding the internals, do the engine lights thing, and in this case the effect will be viewed only from above. Actually, this had been my plan from the start when I was considering the use of a shadow box. In that case, I didn't care how the internals looked. That made things so much easier. Migrating to a clear case opened a door of possibilities that of course, I HAVE TO WALK THROUGH. Tongue Tied Son of a ...

Some decisions made. I will power the dio via a tethered power pack. I have always hated this option because I like things self-contained. However, this is my best solution and it is a decent compromise because it will be detachable. When I don't want the pack attached, I can simply store it. When I want to see the model light up, then I attach it. This offers an additional plus in that if I power all my dios this way-- all I need is one battery back. If I make them all universal, then one pack will do it. You can see the small connector in the plexy housing.

Also, in this image you can see I cut an opening for the model. The model looks cool when I test fit it. I'd need three hands to image it and it is too risky to do so. More to see when I move along.

Below is some experimenting I did creating the water. Notice how the light plays casting shadows below. I like that. If I take my time, have some luck, and keep my patience--it might come out nice. Those ripple effects could cast shadows on the model below the waterline.

I am moving forward using a water effect product by AK Interactive. I had this on hand from other projects and of the few things I tried, this produced the best result for me. It goes on like paste but dries clear.

End of update.
