Rail guns.....I haven't considered that before. It might be a good idea for the smaller interdiction type ships with a complement of short to mid range missile launchers and smaller weapons. Just not too many.
What would a rail gun look like to make it stand out as one?
Question !
Are you going to convert the main Guns to Rail Guns ?
Message sent.
Well, I've got boxes of scrapped kits. But I keep telling myself that one day I'm going to build something scratchbuilt like your model. I just never seem to get around to it...

Thanks. The forward missile boxes and the two deck vehicles are left over parts from the Battletech game system. My next project will probably be a fire support ship or a interdiction type ship similar to what a destroyer might do.
If you or anybody else has left over photo etch parts, warship parts, or maybe even a complete or partial kit that you can afford to get rid of, let me know. If I can use them, Ill trade for them or buy them. Even scraps of P.E. come in handy, some of it comes from aircraft as well as armor sets.
She looks really cool!
Great idea and she's shaping up into a super model!
Thanks for letting us follow along.
Almost to the end now.
The bow looking form the bridge.
The rear of the superstructure and the two missile tubes in the funnel.
The heavy energy cannon located just under the bow.
Two flight deck support vehicles and a possible visitor.
The main bridge and the rotating missile banks on each side. The forward floodlight as well as the one on the starboard side can be seen. The forward light has a shield to protect the bridge.
Finally, the main engine nozzle. You can also see the smaller auxillary engines under the ship.
Looking very cool!!!
Here's the next set of pictures as we get close to finishing.
The lower area under the landing deck Partway down the dark area is the hanger door that protects the launching bay for the ship's fighters. A similar door is on the other side and each is protected by a triple gun turret just below the opening for the launch bays. The turrets can slide out for a short distance to provide a extra amount of protection. Here's the engineering section showing the housing for the main exhaust. The twin tail stinger turrets are mounted and can give a wide field of fire if necessary. The upper engine shielding has been painted since this picture was taken and the main engine nozzle will be mounted after a little more detail work is done. Almost a full length shot. I considered adding a couple large fins but this is a new class ship with a different mission. The idea is to get as close as possible to its objective without being seen. The larger antennas might be spotted and could end up having the ship mistaken for the Yamato, which would attract a lot of unfriendly and unwanted attention. Her job is similar to the small carriers I use today but with more firepower but not as much as Yamato or other class space battleships. The gravity plating for the landing deck has been added. A red and green beacon will be added to the front of the side mounted antennas which will have the ability to move up and down as necessary to keep clear of weapons fire, moving small craft, or just to signal by their position, like the old semaphore system, except you are using high power antennas instead of people outside. Some of the most delicate work are the photo etch antennas on the to of the pagoda superstructure, both at the end of the horizontal supports as well as on the front of the bar as well as the rear of the tower and on the deck near the bow. Some of these are ship's radars in a different scale and the others are pieces I threw together from various parts.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. That sounds like a easier way to get the look of special optical lenses, and ifit doesn't look right it will be easy to take off.
GMorrison Go over to CVS or the Partry Store and see what you can find in stickers. You'll only need small pieces.

Good advice, sounds cheaper, simpler, and cleaner than what I'd proposed...
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Well, you can paint it silver and then put a thin coat of Tamiya or other brand of translucent paint over it to give a tinted effect. Not sure how you could do a rainbow effect though. I know Alclad makes a prismatic paint but I've never used it and not sure if you can hand brush it.
Thanks guys. I was thinking of painting the small verticils recesses on the sides of the quad and outer sided turrets to show a slight rainbow effect or prism effect. Any idea how this might be done? A second option would be to just paint them gloss black or forget the idea completely.
Tamiya makes a great Kure Gray in a spray can. That's an awesome ship.
That's really neat, she's coming along great!
Getting closer to the end now. The ship will be in three colors, two shades of grey and red brown. I'm thinking of adding the typical linoleum brown on the decks of the superstructure and maybe a pattern decal on the flight deck.
I've added a communications array with a protective deck section around the more sensitive areas of the bow to shield it from radiation effects when the main weapons are fired. There will be some re-enforcement braces added to the bow shield. A couple tail guns have been added on each side of the engineering area as well as the screened platform at the edge of the deck. They would be raised or lowered as necessary just like the antenna in front of it, which will also have a navigation light added to the front of the spike. The pagoda structure has a scanner array added to the end of the bar and another type will be added to the front of the bar. These will be able to swing up or down to a better scan and will complement the round scanners on both sides just below the bar. Another array will be added to the back of the pagoda. The box launchers can be seen on their swivel mounts above the main guns. I found a couple places that needed a little more work and will be repainted this weekend.

She's coming along great, love the idea of the sensors on the bottom of the hull. Can see them being used to scan a planet from orbit.
Here's a new update.
The bay doors to the parking and maint. area. There are two access doors, one on each side of the patch and another , smaller door on each side of the extended area. The upper access area to the main engine. Some of the defensive weapons. .On the top row are the quad pulse guns, one step below then are the smaller turret guns that slide into position on their rail system. . Under the ship, instead of having a permanent structure suspended under the, this class ship has two sensor units that can lower into position when needed. They are protected by a armored shield. A few changes made the bridge into a new class with a more open bridge view, thanks to a aircraft canopy. The top of the superstructure is from a Macross Valkyrie and radars will be added to the ends and top of the tubes just before painting. Some access hatches were added for maint. work and the tracks for the outer gun are more visable at the moment.

After this is finally done I have an idea for another class ship with a Battleship once again as the base hull.
Oh really cool! Great to see you still at work on this Ikar!
She's going be an attention getter when you're done.
Believe it or not, I have been able to get some things done betwen work and fighting with the V.A.
These are teh latest shots from no new camerathat I am still trying to learn to operate:
As you can see, progress is being made. More detail is being aded to the main superstructure, the tracks for the smaller weapon turrets has been added that will allow earh individual turret to move toward the outer hull and return to the main part of the pagoda superstructure base.I still have a lot more forming, sanding. fillingand a heck of detail to do. I find that I have been using a quantity of left over P.E. and warship parts. If anybody has any leftover parts they don't need I would be willing to buy them from you. If they don't get on this ship I already have another type in mind that I will be needing supplies for. The carrier Akagi and Mogaim cruiser/carrier have donated many parts and I have made several orders to Freetime Hobbies for gun barrels and other P.E. parts I needed.

I originally wanted to do that, but we decided that there were too many differences to overcome. It is easier just to create a new class warship that was compatablewith the series. This one whas a different layout and different weapons arrangement. The bridge now is bounded and will have an exterior protective framework and more sensors mounted on the pagoda superstructure. There will be a large missile launcher on each side as well as some smaller defensive weapons sounted in various places. It will also have a set of two sensor/targeting dishes that extend from the bottom of the hull from protective housings. I'm waiting for somw radar arrays to come in to mount on the pylons at the top of the superstructure.
more to come
Ohhhhhh cool!!! She's coming along great!
ikari01,
Do you have sketches of what you are aiming for?
I have used 1/700 IJN photo etch on a 1/1000 Space Battleship Yamato before, and it woked out really well.
I also have a kitbash project I have been toying with to bash a full IJN kit with a Space Battleship Yamato kit. The idea is to use all the guns and bridge from the IJN and bash them on the Space version. The difficulty, which might be relevant to you, is that the IJN deck is much wider than the sleeker Space Battleship. Therefore, there is not enough space for a lot of the IJN guns, especially the AA guns.
It was the original idea but after looking at the original design, this was a more viable idea.
Now that Modelpalooza is over until next October, at a new location, it's back to work. Here's a update:
The main bow weapon has been reduced to a very heavy laser The main superstructure is undergoing some mods, the heave shielding for the forward turrets are in place and the different engine is being installed. Both sides of the ship will have a few different types of weapons for various ranges and sensors and targeting systems. I'm think I'll call it the Musashi class Space Attack Ship Toronaga.

Looks cool! Great to see you moving forward on this!
Your conversion is fascinating! Though a full 1/350 Space Battleship Yamato would've been cool too, I suspect this will be less work.
I didn't know there were plans to convert Kentucky - that poor ship was doomed by timing just as the Illinois and Montana were. At least a piece of Kentucky lives on as the bow of Wisconsin. I haven't seen pictures either - but I suspect a carrier built on Kentucky's hull would be more like the Midways than the Essexes.
Finally some progress. I don't know which is harder, doing the modifications to this kit or learning how to use a new camera.
Althugh it's hard to make out in this shot, the deck hs been replaced and the shielding around the forward turrets is underconstruction. The superstructure is undergoing some changes defore being set intoits final location. It will have two tiers of defensive turrets along teh side with a few other turrets of at least one other type added later. The hanger deck will have doors added soon and the engine area will need to be covered, refined, and finalized. The sides of the hull are being modified to get rid of all the detail and curved of the original battleship. Instead of the monster cannon the first ship had the assault type will carry a heavy laser in the bow. It will provide a good olid hit to its target but not drain the ship's energy for a period like the wave motion cannon did, and provide more interior room .
