Howdy folks! Just received and opened the Revell Germany kit number 05121 U.S.S. Hornet CVS-12. It is indeed the classic Essex class kit we have all loved for years.
However there is a pretty large "OOPS!" in this release. The kit is released as the Appolo 11 recovery mission in 1969. Even has the cute itty bitty Appolo capsule.
The decals have deck markings for prior to 1958 however. OOPS!.
Uh oh. Probly not gonna get RG to spring for a set of Starfighter deck markings......

Yeah that's a possibility in theory but I have the Renwal Shangri-La that's set in the mid-50s too. I need the updated landing strip design for the late 60s- early '70s fit. I am also going to update the island details and radars too.

While you are at it , don't forget to refine the bow area around the four large ports in the " Hurricane Bow " . The angles , as molded are too sharp ! This is a problem on both ships .
All you need is to look at photos of the HORNET as she is now in ALAMEDA and you will see what I mean .

Yeah you are. Absolutely correct. The Renewal bow is too sharp for sure and the portholes about 5 times too large. No biggie. The Revell Hornet needs to have it's nose flattened. Some of the Essex class had a nice flat leading edge and others were a more rounded look.
Cruise through www.navsource.org and you will find every ship of the class had wee bit differences from each other. :)

That's typical Navy for you .Even the ship I was on was different from her sisters . And they were all built, served in WW-2 and Korea, and were FRAMMED at the same time , same yard, even .
